About the role
Are you enthusiastic about digital design, digital signal processing, and experimental accelerator physics? This is a unique opportunity to play a significant role in the modernization of CERN's advanced linear accelerators. You will be part of the Accelerator Systems Department (SY) and specifically work within the Radio Frequency (RF) Group, which is tasked with the design, operation, and maintenance of RF acceleration and deflecting systems throughout the CERN accelerator complex. Your contributions will be vital in the ongoing upgrades of Low-Level Radio Frequency (LLRF) systems, particularly in the design and implementation of next-generation digital LLRF cavity controllers.

What you'll do
- Design and develop FPGA firmware that implements precise real-time algorithms for phase, amplitude, and resonance tuning.
- Create and integrate firmware components along with fast diagnostic subsystems to enhance system performance.
- Develop Python-based tools and frameworks aimed at automating hardware testing, parameter characterization, and laboratory data analysis.
- Participate in the integration, laboratory validation, and commissioning of new low-level cavity controllers.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure the successful implementation of RF systems across CERN's accelerator complex.
- Conduct thorough testing and validation of mixed-signal hardware systems to ensure reliability and performance.
- Document design processes, testing procedures, and results to maintain high standards of quality and compliance.
- Engage in continuous learning and professional development to keep up with advancements in FPGA technology and related fields.
Requirements
- Proven experience in FPGA design and firmware development, ideally with VHDL as the primary language.
- Familiarity with FPGA development environments and tools for verification and debugging.
- Proficient programming skills in Python or a similar language, particularly for test automation and data analysis.
- Strong understanding of digital design principles and FPGA development processes.
- Excellent problem-solving skills, particularly in troubleshooting mixed-signal hardware systems.
- Proficient in both spoken and written English, with a willingness to learn French.
Nice to have
- Experience in modeling or simulating digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms or control loops.
- Basic knowledge of Radio Frequency (RF) concepts and control theory, including PID loops.
- Familiarity with hardware testing methodologies and the development of automated test benches for hardware validation.
Skills & tools
- Proficiency in digital design and FPGA development, ideally using VHDL or Verilog.
- Strong programming capabilities in Python.
- Knowledge of digital signal processing techniques, including digital filtering and modulation/demodulation.
- Understanding of feedback control systems and control theory fundamentals.
- Experience with version control systems such as Git and continuous integration practices.
Practical notes
- This position requires work in radiation areas and interventions in underground installations.
- A valid driving license is necessary for this role.
- Stand-by duty may be required based on organizational needs.
- The contract duration is 24 months, with the possibility of extension up to a maximum of 36 months.
- The target start date for this position is September 1, 2026.
