Equipment Management Database Specialist

About the role

In this position, you will play a crucial role in the management of the CMS Equipment Management Database (EMdb) during the CMS Long Shutdown 3 (LS3). Your primary responsibility will be to ensure that all equipment changes - whether installations or removals - are accurately documented in the database. This role requires a blend of strong IT skills and a solid understanding of equipment management processes within the CMS experiment. You will also support your colleagues by preparing documentation and labeling for the services installation campaign, ensuring that all equipment is easily identifiable and trackable throughout its lifecycle.

What you'll do

• Ensure the CMS Equipment Management Database maintains high standards of accuracy, consistency, and integrity by aligning it with real-time physical equipment changes.
• Serve as the primary liaison between the CMS teams conducting field inventory activities and the Equipment Management Database, ensuring all modifications are accurately recorded.
• Maintain and enhance the Equipment Management Database and its associated applications, focusing on their reliability and sustainability while developing new features and visualization tools for improved data management.
• Implement continuous improvements to the database's usability and efficiency, streamlining processes related to the registration and management of equipment, cables, and other assets.
• Collaborate with field teams to ensure smooth operational processes during asset installations, ensuring that the physical inventory aligns with the database records.
• Work alongside the CERN Enterprise Asset Management service to ensure integration of processes across CERN's infrastructure and applications.
• Develop dashboards and other application features to facilitate data quality monitoring and reporting.
• Engage proactively in identifying areas for process improvement and enhancing application functionality.
• Prepare dedicated documentation and labeling for the services installation campaign to support accurate tracking and management of equipment.
• Assist in the decommissioning and disposal of detector components and systems as needed.

Requirements

• A Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science, Applied Physics, or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience.
• Proven experience with relational databases and proficiency in SQL.
• Familiarity with web application development, particularly using technologies such as Oracle APEX, PHP, and JavaScript.
• Experience in monitoring data quality and ensuring consistency between physical assets and digital inventory systems.
• Background in engineering equipment, scientific infrastructure, or large-scale technical installations.
• Ability to develop user-friendly dashboards and application features.
• A proactive approach to improving processes and application functionalities.
• Familiarity with the CMS Experimental and upgrade program is considered an advantage.
• Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to break down complex issues into manageable components.
• Proficient in spoken and written English or French, with a willingness to learn the other language.

Nice to have

• Experience working in radiation areas or underground installations.
• Knowledge of database and data mining architectures and technologies.
• Familiarity with asset management procedures within CERN.
• Experience in developing user experiences and interfaces.
• A valid driving license.

• Experience with web development technologies (e.g., PHP, JavaScript, Oracle APEX).
• Strong analytical skills for data quality monitoring.

Practical notes

• This position requires a commitment to working 40 hours per week.
• The role may involve working in radiation areas and underground installations, necessitating a valid driving license.
• Candidates must be prepared for potential night shifts, weekend work, and official holidays as required by the organization's needs.
• Due to occupational health risks, selected candidates must obtain medical clearance before a contract offer is finalized.
• The job grade for this position is between 6 and 7.
