The organization is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead the Email team, which is responsible for the infrastructure that processes and delivers billions of personalized messages monthly. What you'll do
- Lead the Email team by defining vision, setting goals, and establishing team processes to align with organizational priorities.
- Recruit, coach, and develop a team of software engineers to build a high-performing and collaborative engineering culture.
- Collaborate with product and design partners to build features based on customer feedback and data-driven insights.
- Drive architectural decisions and contribute to the codebase for critical engineering challenges related to message delivery.
- Scale the email channel to support increasing message volumes while maintaining system reliability and performance.
- Implement robust monitoring and observability practices to ensure the stability of the email infrastructure.
- Partner with cross-functional stakeholders to identify opportunities for optimization and growth in the email channel.
- Mentor engineers on best practices for system design, code quality, and operational excellence.
- Facilitate technical discussions and design reviews to ensure solutions meet business and technical requirements.
- Oversee the execution of projects from conception to deployment, ensuring timely delivery and adherence to standards.
- Develop and maintain strong processes for incident response, debugging, and system improvements.
- Collaborate with data teams to analyze performance metrics and inform decisions on system enhancements.
- Ensure compliance with internal policies and external regulations related to email communication and data handling.
- Promote engineering excellence through code reviews, knowledge sharing, and the adoption of new technologies when appropriate.
Requirements
- 5+ years of software engineering experience with a strong foundation in programming and system design.
- 2+ years of experience leading high-performing engineering teams and managing technical professionals.
- Proven ability to build foundational systems at scale and lead projects that drive organizational goals and business impact.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to navigate complex trade-offs and make difficult decisions in a fast-paced environment.
- Comfort working with a high level of autonomy and digging into technical details to solve challenging problems.
- Experience managing deadlines and priorities in a dynamic, growth-focused setting.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, including product, design, and data.
- Commitment to maintaining high standards for code quality, system reliability, and team productivity.
Nice to have
- Professional experience with any of the following: Ruby, Rails, MongoDB, PostgreSQL, Redis, Sidekiq, JavaScript, or React.
- Familiarity with email delivery infrastructure, deliverability best practices, and anti-spam regulations.
- Experience managing cloud infrastructure on platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
- Background in analytics and data pipelines for monitoring user engagement and system performance.
- Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure as code practices.
- Experience mentoring engineers at various levels of seniority and providing career development guidance.
Practical notes
- Compensation for Ontario-based candidates: Base salary CA$191,459
- CA$338,434 per year.
- On Target Earnings (OTE): CA$215,200
- CA$380,400 per year, including variable compensation.
