About the role
Braze is looking for a Senior Software Engineer I to join the Content Cards team in Chicago. This role focuses on building and improving the content card features that power personalized customer messaging across the Braze platform. The engineer will work closely with product managers, designers, and other engineers to deliver high-quality, scalable solutions for content card rendering and management. You will take ownership of features from design through production, contributing to architectural decisions and code quality standards while helping brands deliver rich, interactive messages directly within their mobile applications.

What you'll do
Design and implement content card components that render personalized messages within the Braze customer engagement platform.
Write clean, maintainable code in Java or Kotlin for the Android SDK and related content delivery systems.
Collaborate with the Content Cards product team to define technical requirements and translate user needs into engineering solutions.
Build and maintain APIs that serve content card data to client applications with low latency and high reliability.
Participate in code reviews to ensure consistent code quality and share knowledge across the engineering team.
Write unit and integration tests to verify content card behavior across different devices and platform versions.
Debug and resolve performance issues related to content card loading, rendering, and caching in production environments.
Contribute to the architecture of the content card pipeline, including data modeling and template rendering logic.
Work with the mobile engineering team to ensure content cards integrate smoothly with the broader Braze SDK.
Mentor junior engineers through pair programming, technical discussions, and constructive feedback on pull requests.
Investigate and prototype new content card formats and interaction patterns to improve user engagement metrics.
Document technical designs and implementation decisions in internal wikis and architecture repositories for team reference.
Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
At least three years of professional software engineering experience building mobile or backend systems.
Strong proficiency in Java or Kotlin for Android development and mobile platforms.
Experience with RESTful APIs and designing server-side services that serve data to client applications.
Solid understanding of software design principles including modularity, testability, and separation of concerns.
Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with multiple priorities and shifting requirements.
Experience with version control systems, particularly Git, and standard CI/CD workflows.
Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to both engineering and non-engineering stakeholders.
Familiarity with mobile performance profiling tools and techniques for optimizing content rendering speed.
Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams including data scientists and marketing professionals to inform product decisions.

Experience with content delivery networks and caching strategies for mobile content distribution.
Familiarity with A/B testing frameworks and feature flag systems used in customer engagement products.
Knowledge of JSON-based template systems or markup languages used for dynamic content rendering.
Previous exposure to customer relationship management or marketing technology platforms and analytics tools.
Understanding of data privacy regulations and their impact on customer messaging content.
