About the role
You will manage second-line oversight for Anti-Financial Crime processes to ensure our control framework remains effective and compliant. This role involves performing quality assurance, conducting complex investigations, and providing expert advisory to cross-functional teams. You will act as a key advisor to the AFC Compliance function, ensuring that oversight activities are rigorous and support the integrity of our controls. The position requires a proactive mindset to identify potential weaknesses before they escalate into regulatory or operational issues. You will be responsible for maintaining a robust control environment that aligns with both internal policies and external regulatory expectations. Your work will directly contribute to the stability and reputation of the company's compliance framework. This is a critical role for ensuring that Bitpanda's practices meet the highest standards of financial crime prevention.

What you'll do
Execute second-line quality assurance and control testing on AFC processes to verify alignment with internal standards and Austrian and German regulations. This includes designing test plans, performing control assessments, and documenting results to ensure adherence to policy expectations.
Review Proof of Funds, Source of Funds, transaction monitoring, and suspicious activity reports for accuracy and evidence. You will validate that reviews are complete, findings are clearly documented, and decisions are supported by sufficient evidence.
Conduct enhanced due diligence on high-risk business customers, including legal entity structures and beneficial ownership verification. This involves mapping complex ownership trees, validating official documentation, and assessing associated risks.
Identify and remediate control weaknesses and operational gaps to strengthen the overall compliance framework. You will perform root cause analysis, recommend corrective actions, and track remediation progress to closure.
Partner with Product, Engineering, Risk, and Operations to refine investigation standards and procedural documentation. Collaboration ensures that procedures remain practical, scalable, and aligned with business objectives.
Analyze complex financial crime patterns and typologies using advanced data queries and manual review techniques. You will leverage behavioral analysis to detect anomalies and emerging risks.
Assess the effectiveness of risk-based AML/CFT control frameworks to ensure they remain current with evolving threats. This includes testing control design and operational effectiveness across people, process, and technology dimensions.
Prepare detailed findings and recommendations for both internal stakeholders and external regulators when required. You will translate technical observations into clear, actionable insights for diverse audiences.
Validate the completeness and accuracy of documentation for audits and regulatory examinations. This ensures evidence trails are reliable, consistent, and retrievable during inspections or inquiries.
Support the development and improvement of Standard Operating Procedures to enhance team efficiency and consistency. You will contribute to process optimization that reduces friction and improves execution quality.
Requirements
University degree in Law, Business Administration, Finance, Economics, or a related field. Academic training should provide a foundational understanding of regulatory principles and business operations.
Proven experience in AML investigations, compliance oversight, or financial crime advisory within a regulated financial institution, fintech, or crypto service provider. Demonstrated track record in handling real-world cases is essential.
Professional fluency in both English and German, as the role requires reviewing documentation and reporting under Austrian and German regulations. Both written and verbal communication must be confident and precise.
Strong ability to translate complex regulatory requirements into practical operational controls. You should bridge the gap between legal obligations and day-to-day execution.
Demonstrated understanding of anti-money laundering (AML) and counter-terrorist financing (CFT) principles. Knowledge of typologies, red flags, and risk indicators is expected.
Familiarity with Austrian and German regulatory expectations for financial crime compliance. You should understand supervisory expectations and common interpretation patterns.
Capacity to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. Effective time management and resilience under pressure are critical.
Commitment to maintaining the highest standards of confidentiality and data protection. You will handle sensitive information with discretion and in accordance with internal policies.
Nice to have
Experience with Proof of Funds investigations and complex legal entity reviews. Hands-on experience tracing financial flows and validating ownership structures is valuable.
Proficiency in preparing or assessing Suspicious Activity Reports (SARs) under Austrian or German requirements. Direct exposure to SAR drafting, submission, and remediation is a plus.
Skills & tools
Snowflake SQL or similar data extraction and analysis tools. You should be able to write queries, interpret datasets, and support investigative activities.
Risk-based AML/CFT control frameworks. Familiarity with frameworks used to design, test, and monitor controls in a financial crime context.
