About the role
BillionToOne is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Software Engineer to join our dynamic software engineering team focused on advancing prenatal diagnostics. In this role, you will be instrumental in developing scalable, reliable, and secure software solutions that support our mission to improve personalized genomic medicine for a broad patient population. You will work closely with clinicians, computational biologists, and other cross-functional teams to design and implement backend systems, APIs, and cloud infrastructure that power our innovative platform. This position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge healthcare technology in a collaborative environment. The role requires on-site presence at our Menlo Park office, with a hybrid work schedule involving 2-3 days per week onsite.

What you'll do
- Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend services, APIs, and data integrations that enhance the platform's functionality, reliability, and security.
- Lead projects through all phases, including architecture, design, implementation, testing, deployment, and ongoing maintenance, ensuring high-quality deliverables.
- Collaborate closely with product managers, designers, clinicians, and other engineering teams to create features that meet user needs and operational requirements.
- Develop clean abstractions and APIs to streamline complex laboratory information system workflows, ensuring long-term system stability, maintainability, and scalability.
- Build, configure, and manage secure cloud infrastructure on AWS, including compute resources, storage, networking, and automation tools, to support platform operations and growth.
- Implement CI/CD pipelines, Infrastructure as Code, and automated provisioning processes to improve deployment efficiency, reduce errors, and enable rapid iteration.
- Incorporate observability practices such as monitoring, logging, and alerting to ensure platform health, operational excellence, and quick troubleshooting.
- Scale backend systems and cloud infrastructure to support enterprise workloads, accommodate increasing data volumes, and enable global expansion.
- Promote a culture of ownership, continuous learning, and innovation within the engineering team, encouraging best practices and technical excellence.
- Utilize AI-assisted tools and emerging development practices to enhance developer productivity, improve code quality, and accelerate project timelines.
- Participate in code reviews, technical discussions, and knowledge sharing to foster a collaborative and high-performing engineering environment.
- Stay updated with the latest advancements in cloud computing, backend development, and AI-driven tools to incorporate best practices into the platform.
Requirements
- 5 to 7 years of professional experience in software development, with a proven track record of delivering complex, scalable projects.
- Strong proficiency in web frameworks such as Django and FastAPI, with experience in designing RESTful APIs and backend services.
- Deep understanding of system design, architecture, and domain-driven design principles, with the ability to create robust and maintainable solutions.
- Familiarity with modern AI-assisted development tools and practices, leveraging automation to improve productivity and code quality.
- Hands-on experience with cloud services, especially AWS, including ECS, S3, AWS Batch, EC2, and Lambda functions.
- Solid understanding of database systems, particularly Postgres, and experience in designing efficient data models.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to work effectively within a team and collaborate across disciplines.
- Willingness to work onsite at the Menlo Park office and participate actively in team activities and meetings.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple priorities and delivering results on time.
- Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to identifying and resolving technical challenges.
Nice to have
- Experience with emerging AI-assisted coding environments and tools that enhance software development processes.
- Familiarity with frontend frameworks such as React and Typescript, to better understand full-stack development.
- Knowledge of laboratory information systems and healthcare data standards.
- Prior experience working in healthcare or biotech industries, especially in regulated environments.
