About the role

BillionToOne is seeking a motivated Clinical Laboratory Scientist with a California Clinical Laboratory Scientist License to join our dynamic CLIA team. This role involves the processing of cancer blood samples in a high-complexity laboratory environment. You will work on Sundays from 7 AM to 3:30 PM, contributing to our mission of advancing diagnostic capabilities in oncology. In this capacity, you will own the execution of complex molecular assays that directly inform patient care decisions. You will be responsible for maintaining the highest standards of accuracy and precision in a fast-paced diagnostic setting. The position requires a proactive approach to troubleshooting and ensuring the seamless operation of laboratory workflows. You will collaborate closely with other scientific professionals to drive innovation in clinical testing methodologies. Your work will play a critical role in translating complex biological data into actionable insights for oncology treatment.

What you'll do

• Perform intricate molecular biology procedures to detect and quantify disease biomarkers with high sensitivity.
• Execute rigorous quality control protocols to monitor assay performance and maintain compliance with regulatory standards.
• Operate and maintain sophisticated laboratory instrumentation to ensure optimal functionality and data integrity.
• Validate new testing procedures and methodologies to support the expansion of the laboratory's technical capabilities.
• Document all experimental procedures, results, and instrument calibrations with meticulous attention to detail and accuracy.
• Analyze complex data sets to identify trends, anomalies, and opportunities for process improvement within the testing workflow.
• Provide technical guidance and mentorship to support the professional development of junior laboratory staff members.
• Liaise with internal departments to ensure the timely and accurate reporting of diagnostic test results.
• Implement safety and quality management systems to mitigate risks and ensure a safe working environment.
• Contribute to the evaluation and selection of new reagents, instruments, and technologies for laboratory adoption.
• Troubleshoot unexpected issues in assay performance through systematic investigation and problem-solving.
• Support the development and execution of research studies aimed at improving diagnostic accuracy and efficiency.
• Ensure strict adherence to Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and all relevant standard operating procedures (SOPs).
• Communicate effectively with cross-functional teams to integrate laboratory findings into the broader diagnostic strategy.

Requirements

• Possess a bachelor's degree in chemical, physical, or biological sciences from an accredited institution.
• Hold a minimum of 1 to 2 years of hands-on experience as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist within a recognized clinical environment.
• Maintain a valid California Clinical Laboratory Scientist License that is current and in good standing.
• Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of CLIA regulations and the ability to comply with ASCP, CGMBS, or generalist license requirements.
• Have practical experience conducting manual molecular biology techniques, specifically DNA extraction and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays.
• Show proficiency in utilizing Google Docs, Microsoft Word, and Excel for data analysis and report generation.
• Develop a strong understanding of basic statistical principles as they apply to clinical laboratory testing.
• Exhibit familiarity with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) for efficient data tracking and reporting.
• Cultivate strong attention to detail to ensure the accuracy and reliability of all laboratory outputs.
• Demonstrate the ability to adapt quickly and perform effectively under tight time constraints and shifting priorities.
• Function effectively as a self-motivated team player who contributes positively to a collaborative environment.
• Communicate with exceptional verbal and written skills to convey complex information clearly and concisely.

• Bring prior experience working within a fast-paced start-up environment where agility is essential.
• Possess a foundational familiarity with cancer biology and the molecular mechanisms of the disease.
• Have a background working in a cell-free DNA laboratory setting, particularly in liquid biopsy applications.

Practical notes

For this position, the total compensation package can reach up to $156,194 annually, which includes an hourly wage ranging from $59.14 to $67.29. Actual compensation will be determined based on experience and the chosen salary/equity split.
