About the role
Senior Game Designer
Behaviour Interactive is seeking a Senior Game Designer to join our Montreal studio and lead the design direction for a major, globally recognized survival franchise. In this pivotal role, you will be instrumental in shaping the future of a live service game that reaches millions of players. Your responsibility is to own the design vision, transforming high-level narrative themes and strategic goals into tangible, engaging, and sustainable gameplay systems. You will act as a key creative leader, ensuring that the game's core identity remains strong while fostering long-term player engagement.
This is a permanent, full-time position based in our Montreal, Quebec studio. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with production, engineering, and live operations teams to deliver ambitious design solutions that are both creative and executable. The compensation for this role is competitive, ranging from 135,000 to 175,000 CAD annually.
Key Responsibilities
Your daily work will focus on architecting the systems that define the player journey. You will design intricate gameplay mechanics with a sharp focus on long-term engagement, clarity, and scalability. A critical part of your role will be establishing robust content pipelines that effectively integrate analytics data. This will allow us to validate design decisions, understand player behavior, and support the experimentation of new features without disrupting the core experience.
You will be the architect of fun, translating abstract narrative concepts into coherent and compelling gameplay loops and progression structures. This requires a deep partnership with the engineering team to validate technical constraints from the earliest stages of design, ensuring that your vision is grounded in technical reality. You will define precise tuning parameters for progression curves, difficulty spikes, and reward structures, ensuring the game remains challenging yet accessible to a wide range of player skill levels. also, you will create clear and comprehensive design documentation that aligns writers, artists, and QA testers on the intended player experience, fostering a unified creative vision across all disciplines.
To mitigate risk and validate your ideas, you will build and maintain functional prototypes to test core mechanics and systemic hypotheses before committing to full production. A crucial aspect of this role is collaborating with our live operations specialists. You will work with them to plan and schedule game updates, balancing the need for new content with the rhythms of the community to maintain a healthy and sustainable live environment.
Requirements
To excel in this position, you must bring a proven track record of shipping complex gameplay systems within a live production environment. We are looking for someone with deep, hands-on knowledge of action-survival game mechanics, systemic design principles, and long-term player engagement strategies. You must be an exceptional communicator, capable of articulating your design intent clearly and persuasively in English, both in verbal discussions and written documentation.
Nice to Have
Prior experience designing for live games or service-based models is highly preferred. A demonstrated history of working on games that require ongoing player retention and engagement will be a significant asset.
Skills & Tools
- Proficiency with the Unity game engine.
- Strong analytical skills and experience working with data-driven design using tools like Jira.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience with design documentation tools such as Confluence.
