Tech Lead - ToolHound
Job description
Tech Lead - ToolHound at Beacon Software.
About the role
You will own the end-to-end technology strategy for ToolHound, a mature and profitable tool-and-asset-management platform serving industrial, construction, energy, and manufacturing customers. In this role, you will be the single technical owner of the product, responsible for defining and executing the roadmap with direct impact on retention, expansion, and new vertical adoption. You will lead a small, high-ownership engineering team, mentor the current engineer, and set the technical and product bar for every release. This position requires deep, current .NET expertise because the platform is built on that stack today, and you will be the person who modernizes it while preserving its reliability. You will also own the integration of AI capabilities into the core product, turning natural-language assistants and agentic workflows into production features that customers rely on.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Own the technical and product roadmap for ToolHound, deciding what gets built and why in partnership with the GM and key customers.
- Translate business priorities around retention, expansion, new verticals, and operational leverage into a sequenced engineering plan you are accountable for delivering.
- Drive every technical decision including architecture, code quality, security, data modeling, performance, release engineering, and the migration path for the platform.
- Ship production AI features that change the business, taking the natural-language assistant and broader AI surface from concept to production with evals, guardrails, and tenant-safe tool use.
- Lead and grow the engineering team by mentoring the current engineer, raising quality standards, and establishing best practices across the codebase.
- Increase velocity and harden the codebase by modernizing the stack, tightening SQL and data layer performance, and investing in test coverage and automation.
- Be the technical face of ToolHound, earning trust with operators and customers, setting expectations, and communicating clearly in writing.
- Partner closely with the business to understand operational constraints and translate them into technical requirements that support safe multi-tenant operation.
- Define and enforce engineering standards that align ToolHound with Beacon's shared practices over time.
- Balance hands-on coding with leadership, staying involved in critical implementation details while guiding the broader technical direction.
Requirements
- A senior .NET expert on day one, with deep, current C# and ASP.NET Core (through .NET 8-10), capable of owning a large, mature codebase immediately.
- A genuine generalist who is T-shaped, deeply proficient in .NET now but able to pick up new languages, stacks, and clouds quickly and enjoy doing so.
- Cloud and SQL depth, including designing, deploying, and operating real systems in the cloud and reasoning about production databases at scale.
- Mobile fluency with hands-on experience in cross-platform mobile, including .NET MAUI or historical Xamarin and native mobile, especially around scanning, camera, and offline sync.
- AI-native engineering experience, having shipped production software on foundation models with tool use, retrieval, evals, and guardrails in a multi-tenant context.
- Technical leadership background, having led a small engineering team, mentored engineers, and raised quality and codebase health in a high-ownership environment.
- Product and business instinct, with the ability to read what drives business outcomes, prioritize accordingly, and defend a roadmap to executives and customers.
- A strong writer and communicator who builds trust with non-engineers and communicates complex technical concepts clearly and precisely.
Nice to have
- Experience across target technologies such as TypeScript/React, Go, Python, AWS, Kubernetes, infrastructure-as-code, modern CI/CD, Postgres, and metrics or product-analytics tooling.
- Vertical or B2B SaaS experience in domains like asset management, inventory, field service, logistics, or construction technology.
- Background with RFID, IoT, or hardware-integrated systems and their integration into software platforms.
- Experience with DevExpress reporting, multi-tenant SaaS architecture, or software licensing systems.
- Experience modernizing or re-platforming a legacy .NET codebase while maintaining continuity for customers and users.
