About the role
You will own the end to end tax function for a growing portfolio of software businesses across Canada and the United States, setting the technical and strategic direction for compliance, provision, indirect tax, and transaction tax. This is a senior, self-directed position where you will lead external tax advisors and specialists, steering the technical tax agenda rather than following internal coaching. You will drive the tax workstream of the ongoing ASPE to IFRS conversion, establishing controls and processes that scale with our acquisition driven growth. This role is foundational in building a mature internal tax capability that supports portfolio expansion and complex cross border structures. You will partner closely with corporate finance and operating teams to align tax outcomes with business strategy and operational execution.

What you'll do
Own Canadian corporate income tax compliance (T2) for all portfolio entities, including installments, elections, and detailed supporting schedules.
Own U.S. federal and state corporate income tax compliance across operating entities, ensuring consistency and accuracy across jurisdictions.
Maintain a portfolio wide compliance calendar and implement rigorous workflows to guarantee timely and accurate filings in every jurisdiction.
Coordinate cross border matters such as Canada U.S. structures, withholding obligations, and intercompany processes with internal finance and external advisors.
Own sales tax, GST/HST, and U.S. state indirect tax compliance across the portfolio, reducing exposure and improving accuracy.
Lead multi state nexus analysis and execute new state registrations, addressing common gaps arising from acquisitions and integrations.
Manage indirect tax setup, registrations, and account configuration for newly acquired entities to ensure seamless onboarding.
Prepare and review current and deferred tax provisions in support of consolidated financial reporting, ensuring technical accuracy and consistency.
Lead the tax workstream of the ASPE to IFRS conversion, including deferred tax accounting under IAS 12 and related disclosures.
Support the year end audit on all tax matters and serve as the primary point of contact with external auditors on tax issues.
Support deal structuring for M&A transactions, advising on entity structure and cross border Canada U.S. considerations to optimize outcomes.
Review purchase agreements for tax provisions and manage post close tax trueups, ensuring alignment with agreed terms and conditions.
Onboard acquired entities into the tax compliance calendar, provision process, and control environment to maintain portfolio wide standards.
Own and direct relationships with external tax advisors in both Canada and the United States, providing clear direction and oversight of all work.
Partner with Corporate Finance to align tax data flows, reporting, and process improvements that enhance transparency and efficiency.
Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance is required as the foundation for advanced technical tax responsibilities.
CPA designation is mandatory, demonstrating your professional commitment and depth of technical knowledge.
Tax specialization through CPA In Depth Tax (Canada) or U.S. CPA / EA equivalent is essential for navigating complex compliance and provision requirements.
Minimum 6 years of progressive tax experience is required, ideally gained within Big 4 or a national accounting firm.
Hands on experience with cross border Canada U.S. corporate income tax compliance is a strict requirement for this portfolio.
Experience preparing and reviewing tax provisions under ASPE, IFRS/IAS 12, or U.S. GAAP is non negotiable for this role.
You must be self directed and technically authoritative, capable of owning the function and leading external advisors without internal coaching on technical matters.
Excellent organizational, analytical, and communication skills are required to manage multiple deadlines and complex tax issues.
High attention to detail is essential to ensure accuracy and compliance across jurisdictions and entity types.
Nice to have
Indirect tax experience, including GST/HST and U.S. sales or use tax, is preferred given the portfolio's multi jurisdictional nature.
M&A or transaction tax experience, including deal structuring and post close integration, is valued for supporting acquisition driven growth.
Experience in a multi entity, acquisition driven environment, such as a VMS roll up or other acquisitive holding company, is preferred.
Direct experience with an ASPE to IFRS conversion or similar GAAP conversion projects is a preferred qualification.
Experience working in software or SaaS industries is preferred to accelerate integration and compliance alignment.
Familiarity with NetSuite ERP or a similar multi entity system is preferred to support efficient process and reporting.
Practical notes
This role follows a hybrid schedule with in office work required 3 to 4 days per week to enable collaboration and deep work sessions.
Travel is not expected as part of this role, ensuring consistent focus on portfolio tax leadership from Toronto.
