Staff Software Development Engineer in Test
Job description
About the role
At Assured, we are on a mission to modernize insurance, with a specific focus on transforming claims processing - the foundational yet often overlooked core of the industry. Claims decisions, which determine whether payments are made, are currently highly manual, relying on phone calls, faxes, and gut instinct, costing the industry tens of billions annually. Assured provides software solutions that enable large insurers to operate in a modern, technology-driven landscape. We build systems ranging from self-service claim-filing interfaces to backend fraud detection, serving as the engine for claims processing for some of the world's largest insurers. The environment is dynamic, collaborative, and rewarding, tackling challenges that span from creating empathetic digital experiences for stressed claimants to orchestrating large-scale ML-driven decision-making on billions of dollars in claims.
We are seeking a Staff SDET (Software Development Engineer in Test) with strong proficiency in TypeScript to join our engineering team. In this role, you will architect and own the end-to-end testing strategy for critical claims processing features from initial design through production rollout. You will build and evolve scalable test automation frameworks that allow product teams to move with speed while maintaining high confidence in release quality. You will partner deeply with developers and product managers to shift quality left and define testability requirements for new functionality. Using TypeScript, you will craft resilient UI, API, and E2E test suites that withstand the complexity of real-world workflows. You will act as a quality consultant, helping the team understand risks and make data-driven decisions about what to test. You will investigate flaky tests and root cause failures to keep the pipeline fast and reliable, and you will document testing strategies and best practices so that quality standards scale with the business.
What you'll do
- Design and implement scalable test automation frameworks using TypeScript to support complex insurance workflows.
- Write and maintain automated UI, API, E2E, and integration tests that validate core claims processing features.
- Collaborate with developers to write testable code and integrate tests early in the development lifecycle.
- Participate in code reviews, design reviews, and contribute to overall testability and quality improvements.
- Continuously improve test coverage, reliability, and performance of automation to reduce maintenance overhead.
- Integrate test suites into CI/CD pipelines using tools like GitLab CI/CD, CircleCI, or similar to enable rapid feedback.
- Investigate test failures, triage bugs, and identify root causes of defects in collaboration with engineering and product teams.
- Contribute to the creation of testing strategies, QA best practices, and documentation that influence engineering standards.
- Own end-to-end quality for specific product areas, ensuring that releases meet functional, performance, and security expectations.
- Mentor other engineers and QA partners on test automation techniques and quality-minded development practices.
Requirements
- Experience as an SDET or QA Automation Engineer in a software development environment.
- Strong proficiency in TypeScript and the overall JavaScript ecosystem, including modern ES6+ features and tooling.
- Experience with test automation tools and frameworks for UI, API, and E2E testing.
- Experience with CI/CD tools and practices, including pipeline configuration and maintenance.
- Solid understanding of the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) and Agile methodologies.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to break down complex systems into testable components.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with cross-functional teams.
- Attention to detail and a commitment to writing maintainable, readable, and robust test code.
