About the role
Appen is actively recruiting native German speakers to integrate with the CrowdGen team for the specific initiative known as Project Vistula. In this capacity, you will serve as a linguistic evaluator, responsible for scrutinizing the output of automated translation systems. Your primary focus will be the analysis of English and German text pairs to identify areas for enhancement. This role is critical for training and refining a major translation engine to achieve higher accuracy. You will exercise a high degree of individual responsibility in determining the quality and adequacy of machine-generated content. The position requires a meticulous approach to detail and a strong command of both source and target languages. Your work will directly influence the development and performance of the translation model. This is a project-based engagement conducted on an independent contractor basis.

What you'll do
Assess the linguistic accuracy and fluency of translations between English and German without relying on external reference materials.
Determine the overall quality and suitability of machine-translated content for its intended purpose.
Assign a quality rating to each translation file based on a predefined set of criteria.
Identify specific errors in grammar, syntax, and terminology within the translated text.
Provide structured feedback that highlights issues and suggests necessary improvements.
Evaluate the adequacy of the translation in conveying the original meaning and context.
Complete processing of assigned files within the specified timeframe to support ongoing engine development.
Analyze subtle differences in tone and style between the original and translated content.
Verify that the translated output adheres to the required standards of professionalism and clarity.
Contribute to the larger dataset by ensuring that your evaluations are precise and consistently applied.
Document your findings in a manner that is clear and useful for subsequent model training.
Support the iterative improvement of the translation engine through diligent and insightful assessment.
Participate in the continuous calibration of evaluation metrics based on project requirements.
Assist in maintaining the integrity and reliability of the translation platform for end users.
Requirements
You must be a native speaker of German to perform the evaluation tasks effectively.
You must possess a high level of proficiency in English to accurately compare the source and target texts.
You are required to have a professional background in linguistics, translation, or language instruction.
You must be able to work independently and make informed judgments without direct supervision.
You are required to select both German and English as your primary or additional languages during the application process.
You must meet the technical prerequisites for accessing the evaluation platform.
You are required to adhere strictly to the project guidelines and quality standards.
Failure to select the correct language settings will result in automatic rejection of your application.

Previous experience in language quality assessment is preferred but not mandatory.
Practical notes
The compensation for this role is set at 10.95 USD per file. Based on the estimated completion time of 15 to 20 minutes per file, the effective hourly rate ranges from 32.85 USD to 43.80 USD. This structure allows for efficient workers to maximize their earnings. You must ensure that your application reflects the correct language qualifications to avoid disqualification. If you are selected for the project, you will receive an email from CrowdGen with instructions to create and configure your account. The engagement is classified as an independent contractor project-based relationship. There is no specified location for this role other than the requirement to be based in Germany.
