You are the steward of protective relay coordination, developing schemes that safeguard critical assets and maintain operational continuity. Your work will involve the meticulous investigation of transient phenomena and the assessment of system stability under varying load conditions. You will own the creation of comprehensive study reports that translate complex technical data into actionable insights for stakeholders. This position requires collaboration with multidisciplinary teams to integrate power study objectives with broader project goals and timelines. You will apply cutting-edge software tools to model intricate electrical networks and validate theoretical models against real-world performance. What you'll do
Perform in-depth power flow analysis to evaluate voltage profiles and power distribution across complex electrical networks.
Conduct comprehensive short circuit studies to determine fault currents and validate the adequacy of protective devices.
Execute protective relay coordination studies to ensure selective tripping and minimize outage impact during faults.
Investigate transient events and harmonic distortions to assess their impact on system stability and equipment integrity.
Develop and maintain detailed single-line diagrams that accurately represent the electrical one-line configuration of client systems.
Utilize advanced power system simulation software to model scenarios and predict system behavior under various operating conditions.
Analyze load flow data to identify potential overloads and recommend corrective actions to optimize system performance.
Prepare detailed technical reports and presentation materials to communicate study findings and recommendations to engineering teams and clients.
Collaborate with project managers and other engineering disciplines to align power study deliverables with project schedules and budgets.
Perform equipment selection studies to ensure that breakers, transformers, and other components meet system requirements and industry standards.
Support the integration of distributed energy resources and renewable energy systems into the existing power grid infrastructure.
Document all study methodologies, assumptions, and results to maintain a clear record for future reference and audit purposes.
Requirements
Candidates must possess a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related technical field.
You must hold a current Professional Engineer (PE) license or be eligible to obtain one in the state of Kansas.
A minimum of four years of post-graduation professional experience in power systems engineering is required.
You must demonstrate a thorough understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC) and IEEE standards relevant to power studies.
Proficiency in power system analysis software such as ETAP, SKM, or PSCAD is mandatory for success in this role.
You should have a strong grasp of electrical distribution systems, including substation layouts and medium voltage equipment.
The ability to interpret complex engineering schematics and translate them into practical study models is essential.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required to convey technical information to diverse audiences effectively.
Nice to have
Experience with solar and energy storage integration studies is a significant advantage in this specialized field.
Familiarity with utility interconnectivity procedures and regional transmission organization requirements is preferred.
Knowledge of advanced transient analysis and power quality mitigation techniques is highly desirable.
Experience mentoring junior engineers or contributing to the technical development of the team is valued.
Practical notes
This role is based in Overland Park, Kansas, and requires consistent in-person presence during standard business hours.
Travel may be required to visit client sites and conduct on-site assessments or system measurements.
Employment eligibility to work in the United States is required, and sponsorship is not available for this position.
Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain a Professional Engineer license to practice in Kansas.
