About the role

You will own the full scope of dietetic care for patients in a high-acuity Los Angeles clinic, operating at the top of your license within a multidisciplinary severe mental illness team. You will design and execute evidence-based nutrition interventions that directly support treatment goals for complex conditions such as schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, bipolar I, and treatment-resistant depression. You will partner closely with psychiatrists, therapists, primary care providers, and community health workers to ensure coordinated, longitudinal care that addresses both physical and mental health outcomes. You will leverage structured coaching and clinical tools to help patients reduce stress, improve mindfulness, and strengthen medication adherence through nutrition and lifestyle change. You will contribute to an evolving learning health system where your clinical work informs new frameworks and research alongside collaborators like Mass General Brigham. You will uphold the standards of Amae's integrated care model, ensuring that every patient receives practical, compassionate, and sustainable nutritional support. What you'll do

Conduct comprehensive nutrition assessments for patients with severe mental illness to identify health and behavioral needs.

Deliver individualized nutrition counseling using evidence-based strategies tailored to the complexities of SMI.

Lead group coaching sessions that reinforce nutrition education, peer support, and practical skill building.

Implement behavior-change strategies that address barriers to dietary adherence and support treatment goals.

Monitor patient progress and adjust care plans in response to evolving clinical, lifestyle, and medication needs.

Support integration of nutrition interventions within the broader interdisciplinary care team structure.

Collaborate with dietitians and nutritionists to standardize and refine protocols for metabolic and gastrointestinal health.

Promote medication adherence through targeted education on food-drug interactions and appetite management.

Guide patients in improving sleep, physical activity, and financial health as they relate to nutritional outcomes.

Document clinical encounters and outcomes to support quality improvement and research initiatives.

Participate in protocol-driven research activities that shape the future of severe mental illness care.

Educate patients on mindful eating practices that reduce stress and enhance overall treatment compliance.

Act as a clinical expert within the clinic, modeling best practices for integrated dietetic care.

Serve as a point of contact for cross-functional teams to ensure alignment on patient-centered goals.

Requirements

Must hold active registration as a Dietitian in the state of California or eligibility to obtain such registration.

Possess a current Registered Dietitian credential with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (RD/RDN).

Hold a minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Dietetics, Nutrition, or a closely related field.

Demonstrate clinical experience in nutrition counseling, preferably within mental health, behavioral health, or primary care settings.

Have foundational knowledge of severe mental illness, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and treatment-resistant depression.

Be proficient in interpreting metabolic laboratory values and understanding the nutritional implications of psychotropic medications.

Commit to working within an integrated care model that prioritizes teamwork, longitudinal relationships, and shared accountability.

Comply with all HIPAA regulations and maintain strict confidentiality regarding patient health information.

Demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
