About the role
The owns the end to end realization of physical proof points from digital design to verified hardware. This role owns the creation of functional and visual prototypes of parts, mechanical assemblies, and finished devices to validate design intent. The hire will prepare detailed 3D models for prototyping, verifying geometry and adapting designs for the chosen manufacturing technology. You will be responsible for selecting the optimal technology, material, model orientation, and print parameters based on the specific prototype purpose. The role requires performing independent assembly and post-processing of parts after fabrication to ensure they meet functional standards. You will conduct hands on operations such as drilling, cutting threads, sanding, gluing, and installing threaded inserts and fasteners to complete prototype builds. The position involves fabricating simple parts using milling, turning, laser cutting, and other available technologies in the lab. You will identify constructive issues during prototype assembly and provide clear, actionable feedback to designers for iteration. The role participates in device mechanism verification by checking assembly, clearance, geometry, strength, ergonomics, and component accessibility to ensure prototypes function as intended.

- Select technology, material, model orientation, and print parameters based on prototype purpose to optimize for durability, surface finish, or speed.
- Perform independent assembly and post-processing of parts after fabrication, including cleaning, curing, and finishing operations.
- Conduct hand operations such as drilling, cutting threads, sanding, gluing, and installing threaded inserts and fasteners to complete assemblies.
- Fabricate simple parts using milling, turning, laser cutting, and other available technologies to support rapid iteration.
- Identify constructive issues during prototype assembly and provide feedback to designers to improve future design iterations.
- Participate in device mechanism verification by checking assembly, clearance, geometry, strength, ergonomics, and component accessibility.
- Conduct basic mechanical and functional tests of prototypes to validate performance against design requirements and failure modes.
- Support prototypes in operational state and iterate after testing, incorporating lessons learned into subsequent builds.
- Maintain prototype queue, control timelines, and manage material usage to ensure efficient use of lab resources and on schedule delivery.
- Service laboratory equipment and maintain clean and orderly workspace to support safe and effective prototyping operations.
- Collaborate with designers, hardware engineers, industrial designers, testers, and technologists to align prototype outcomes with project goals.
- Ensure all prototype documentation and version control are current to facilitate traceability and knowledge sharing.
- Contribute to the development of prototyping best practices and standards across the hardware team.
- Assist in troubleshooting failed prints or machining operations and propose corrective actions to reduce rework.
- Support technology scouting activities for new materials and processes that can improve prototype fidelity or reduce lead times.
Requirements
- You need Basic proficiency in SolidWorks or other CAD to create and modify models suitable for prototyping.
- Understanding of solid geometry, assemblies, tolerances, fits, and relative positioning of parts to ensure parts integrate correctly during assembly.
- Ability to validate models before fabrication to check for geometry errors, wall thickness, and manufacturability.
- Adapt models for 3D printing, machining, or other prototyping technologies by adjusting features and tolerances for the process.
- Perform simple constructive modifications such as adding mounts, holes, chamfers, ribs, and tolerancing features to support assembly and function.
- Work with STL, STEP, 3MF, OBJ, and other 3D exchange formats to import and export models across different tools.
- Understanding of material properties for 3D printing including PLA, PETG, ABS, ASA, PA, TPU, and engineering composites to select appropriate materials for prototype function.
- Hands on willingness to experiment and iterate prototypes to functional state through trial, error, and systematic debugging.
- Ability to work with hardware engineers, industrial designers, testers, and technologists in a cross functional environment to align on goals and constraints.
- Capacity to follow detailed instructions and safety procedures in a lab environment to ensure safe and reliable operations.
- Willingness to learn new tools, processes, and materials as the prototyping scope evolves over time.
- Commitment to maintaining accurate records of builds, tests, and material consumption for traceability and continuous improvement.
