Mechanical Engineer
Job description
About the role
You will define the physical architecture of battery-powered security and automation devices that must operate for years on a single charge. You will translate abstract System and Device requirements into robust mechanical concepts, enclosures, and moving components that survive harsh environments. You will collaborate daily with embedded engineers, industrial designers, and QA specialists to iterate on prototypes and validate compliance. You will apply first principles thinking to optimize mechanics for cost, manufacturability, and user experience across millions of units. You will own the complete mechanical lifecycle from initial sketches through pilot production and field feedback analysis. You will rigorously analyze thermal, mechanical, and environmental stresses to ensure long-term reliability in the field. You will champion Design for Manufacturing and Design for Human principles to simplify assembly and improve everyday usability. You will document designs and decisions in a way that enables scalable and consistent production across global supply chains.
Key facts
What you'll do
Analyze mechanical requirements and translate them into specifications for enclosure design, component placement, and structural integrity.
Develop enclosure concepts and 3D models that balance protection, aesthetics, ease of manufacturing, and battery longevity objectives.
Select and specify materials, coatings, and finishes that meet durability, regulatory, and cost targets for mass production.
Design internal structures, mounts, and fastening systems to secure PCBs, batteries, and sensors under vibration and thermal cycling.
Optimize mechanisms for switch and button actuation to deliver reliable operation while minimizing power consumption and mechanical wear.
Perform hand calculations and simulations for stress, strain, deflection, and thermal expansion to prevent premature failures in the field.
Coordinate with the Device and QA departments to validate prototypes, run durability tests, and incorporate feedback into improved designs.
Apply Design for Manufacturing principles to simplify processes, reduce part count, and eliminate costly or error-prone assembly steps.
Partner with System and Automation teams to ensure that mechanical solutions align with product functionality, safety, and certification requirements.
Support the creation of technical documentation, bills of materials, and manufacturing instructions for suppliers and assembly lines.
Drive root cause analysis for field returns, identifying mechanical failure modes and implementing corrective actions at scale.
Continuously benchmark industry best practices and emerging materials to keep the product competitive in multiple global markets.
Ensure that all mechanical designs respect low-power constraints, maximizing battery runtime without compromising user experience.
Champion sustainability and DFH considerations by improving serviceability, repairability, and end-of-life handling of devices.
Requirements
You have a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design, or a related technical field with a strong mechanical focus.
You are fluent in 3D modeling tools such as SolidWorks, Creo, or Rhino, and can produce production-ready CAD files and drawings.
You understand injection molding, stamping, and other common manufacturing processes, including tolerancing for high-volume production.
You have hands-on experience with material selection, plastics, metals, and gasketing for enclosure design and durability.
You are comfortable performing hand calculations and using simulation tools for structural, thermal, and motion analysis.
You know battery safety, energy storage basics, and the impact of enclosure design on battery performance and lifecycle.
You have a keen eye for detail and a demonstrated ability to translate design intent into manufacturable solutions at scale.
You communicate effectively with hardware, firmware, and industrial design teams to align on trade-offs and shared goals.
Nice to have
Experience with STM32-based embedded devices and understanding of how mechanical choices affect firmware and power management.
Familiarity with regulatory standards and testing related to safety, electromagnetic compatibility, and radio equipment.
Background in consumer electronics, IoT, or security systems, and knowledge of DFM/DFH practices in high-volume manufacturing.
