About the role
Agoda is seeking an Indirect Tax Manager to join the team at Agoda Services Co. Ltd. in Bangkok. This role is centered on providing strategic global tax advisory for Value Added Tax, Goods and Services Tax, and sales tax across a diverse range of business operations. The successful hire will own the analysis and interpretation of complex indirect tax regulations, translating them into actionable guidance for the business. You will be responsible for managing high-stakes tax projects from initial scoping through final implementation and stakeholder sign-off. The position requires a proactive approach to identifying both tax risks and potential optimization opportunities within evolving market structures. Close collaboration with external tax advisors and internal departments will be essential to ensure alignment on tax strategy and compliance. You will drive the integration of tax requirements into core business systems and processes to maintain accurate and efficient tax reporting.

What you'll do
- Assess intricate business models and commercial arrangements to determine the correct indirect tax position and treatment.
- Conduct detailed risk assessments to uncover potential indirect tax exposures and define strategic requirements for new programs, products, and partnerships.
- Interpret and implement global regulatory changes, ensuring that internal controls and procedures are updated to reflect the latest indirect tax laws.
- Analyze contracts and commercial documentation from an indirect tax advisory perspective to identify tax implications and safeguard the company's position.
- Manage end-to-end indirect tax projects, including scoping, resource planning, budgeting, execution, and successful implementation across multiple jurisdictions.
- Act as a key influencer and communicator, articulating complex tax concepts to cross-functional stakeholders such as Product, Commercial, Legal, Finance, and IT.
- Supervise the accuracy and reconciliation of output and input VAT/GST filings to ensure compliance and financial integrity.
- Serve as the primary technical contact for external tax advisors, providing context and direction to facilitate efficient and effective advisory work.
- Develop and maintain documentation for tax positions, processes, and procedures to ensure clarity, consistency, and audit readiness.
- Support the evaluation and selection of technology and systems, such as Oracle ERP, to ensure they accommodate indirect tax requirements effectively.
- Collaborate with regional teams to ensure a cohesive and consistent approach to indirect tax compliance and strategy across the APAC, EMEA, and US regions.
- Provide subject matter expertise to support commercial negotiations and pricing models with consideration for indirect tax impact.
- Monitor the tax landscape within the e-commerce and travel sectors to identify trends, challenges, and opportunities specific to these industries.
- Guide the development of internal policies and training materials to enhance the indirect tax knowledge and capabilities of the broader finance organization.
Requirements
- Hold a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Tax Economics, Law, Accounting, Finance, or a closely related field.
- Possess a minimum of 8 years of professional experience in indirect tax, with a preference for candidates with backgrounds in Big 4 firms, top-tier law firms, or large in-house tax departments.
- Demonstrate technical proficiency in global indirect tax domains, including but not limited to Value Added Tax, Goods and Services Tax, and sales tax.
- Exhibit the capability to manage complex projects autonomously, from the initial problem definition through to execution, testing, and implementation.
- Have strong verbal and written communication skills in English, enabling effective reporting and interaction with senior leadership and stakeholders.
- Show a proven track record of working with minimal supervision while maintaining a high standard of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Bring experience in analyzing and advising on tax implications for cross-border transactions and multi-jurisdictional business models.
- Display strong analytical and problem-solving skills to navigate ambiguous situations and derive practical tax solutions.
Nice to have
- Hold a graduate degree, such as a Master's or LLM, in Taxation.
- Have professional experience in multiple regions, including APAC, EMEA, or the United States.
- Demonstrate expertise in project management methodologies and the use of project management tools.
- Possess hands-on experience with indirect tax setup and configuration within enterprise resource planning systems like Oracle.
- Have a background working in the e-commerce or travel industry, understanding the specific tax challenges these sectors face.
