Software Engineer - PostgresSQL
Job description
About the role
You will own the design and implementation of database platform capabilities that power critical payment workloads for global customers such as Meta, Uber, H&M, and Microsoft. You will own the reliability, performance, and developer experience of the SQL database stack across large-scale distributed environments. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional platform and product teams to deliver automation, tooling, and infrastructure that unblock engineering organizations. You will investigate and resolve complex performance and reliability issues spanning kernel, network, and database layers. You will ensure that database operations remain durable and available under demanding production conditions.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Build the platform that abstracts the complexity of large-scale stateful databases, enabling product engineers to focus on business logic.
- Automate operational workflows and migrate manual database management tasks to semi- or full automated solutions.
- Deep dive into performance bottlenecks at the kernel, network, and database level, analyzing metrics, traces, and logs in distributed environments.
- Design and develop tooling and services in languages such as Java, Python, Go, or Rust, leveraging infrastructure-as-code tools like Ansible and Puppet.
- Participate in on-call rotation, not only to resolve incidents but to drive permanent fixes that reduce operational toil over time.
- Provide better insight into database health and behavior, and create release tools to manage schema changes safely across environments.
- Extend database deployments to new data centers and existing ones, supporting deployment to bare metal and OpenStack infrastructures.
- Partner with internal product teams to understand their needs and deliver self-service capabilities that align with platform goals.
Requirements
- You have a deep understanding of Linux networking, file systems, and kernel tuning, and how these impact distributed, stateful services.
- You are proficient in Python, Java, or Go, writing clean, testable, maintainable code for infrastructure and automation.
- You understand the operational challenges of running databases such as PostgreSQL at scale, including durability, uptime, and recovery.
- You are proactive in performing root-cause analysis and building permanent fixes instead of relying on temporary patches.
- You can communicate complex infrastructure concepts clearly to application engineers and work effectively with compute, networking, and storage teams.
- You are comfortable working in environments that span bare metal, OpenStack, and virtualized infrastructures.
- You value observability and invest in metrics, tracing, and logging to drive decisions and improvements.
- You are comfortable using version control, automation frameworks, and configuration management tools as part of your daily workflow.
Nice to have
- Internal knowledge of PostgreSQL internals and optimization techniques.
- Experience operating OpenStack environments or managing large-scale bare metal fleets.
- Familiarity with Infrastructure-as-Code tools such as Terraform, Ansible, and Puppet, and with secret management solutions like Vault.
Practical notes
- This is a permanent role based in Amsterdam.
- The position involves on-call responsibilities as part of the operational model.
- No specific visa or deadline information is provided in the source material.
The role sits at the intersection of platform engineering, database operations, and infrastructure automation, directly supporting the financial technology backbone that processes payments for some of the world's largest enterprises. You will be responsible for ensuring that the database platform remains performant, durable, and easy to operate, even as workloads and infrastructure continue to scale. The work you do will have a direct impact on transaction processing, money movement, and the reliability of critical financial systems. By joining the SQL Databases Enablement team, you will help shape the tools and processes that allow database owners to maintain autonomy while meeting strict operational standards. Your contributions will influence how new data centers are brought online, how schema changes are rolled out safely, and how failures are detected and recovered automatically with minimal downtime. This position is ideal for a systems thinker who enjoys building infrastructure that empowers other engineers to move fast with confidence.
