Senior / Staff Software Engineer, Developer Experience
Job description
About the role
Abridge was founded in 2018 with the mission of powering deeper understanding in healthcare. Our AI-powered platform was purpose-built for medical conversations, improving clinical documentation efficiencies while enabling clinicians to focus on what matters most - their patients. Our enterprise-grade technology transforms patient-clinician conversations into structured clinical notes in real-time, with deep EMR integrations. Powered by Linked Evidence and our purpose-built, auditable AI, we are the only company that maps AI-generated summaries to ground truth, helping providers quickly trust and verify the output. As pioneers in generative AI for healthcare, we are setting the industry standards for the responsible deployment of AI across health systems. We are a growing team of practicing MDs, AI scientists, PhDs, creatives, technologists, and engineers working together to empower people and make care make more sense. We have offices located in the Mission District in San Francisco, the SoHo neighborhood of New York, and East Liberty in Pittsburgh. The role involves building the foundational agentic infrastructure that enables our engineering teams to deliver software with heightened efficiency and reliability.
Key facts
What you'll do
Build and evolve developer infrastructure by owning CI/CD systems, build tooling, and developer platforms that improve velocity and reliability across engineering, driving measurable improvements in build/test times, deployment frequency, and onboarding experience. Design and implement agentic workflows by building MCP servers, autonomous agents, and AI-assisted tooling that embed AI deeply into the development lifecycle, helping teams integrate these tools effectively into their day-to-day work. Own the developer experience to improve the end-to-end developer journey - from local development and testing to deployment and observability - identifying and eliminating friction while treating internal engineers as your primary customers. Drive technical excellence by bringing strong systems thinking to architecture and tooling decisions that enhance developer ergonomics, feedback loops, and development velocity. Evaluate and adopt AI tooling by staying current on AI-powered development tools and guiding adoption across the engineering organization to deliver measurable productivity gains. Contribute to the strategic formation of an agentic engineering team, collaborating closely with the CTO to define priorities and execute on high-impact initiatives that shape how engineering operates at Abridge. Tackle high-ambiguity, cross-functional challenges spanning container orchestration, infrastructure as code, and secure deployment pipelines that underpin the reliability of our healthcare platform. Partner with product and data teams to ensure developer tools align with product objectives and enable fast, safe experimentation for new features. Establish observability and reliability standards for internal tools, ensuring transparency and performance for all engineering workflows. Mentor and enable senior engineers to elevate the overall capability and impact of the developer experience function across the company.
Requirements
Strong experience building and evolving CI/CD systems and build tooling such as Bazel, Buck, GitHub Actions, Buildkite, or CircleCI is required. Hands-on experience with agentic frameworks, MCP servers, LLM tooling, or AI-assisted development workflows is a strict prerequisite. Experience improving developer experience across local development, CI/CD pipelines, internal tooling, and developer workflows is mandatory. Familiarity with production systems in public cloud environments like AWS or GCP is essential. Experience with containerized environments, Kubernetes, and modern infrastructure tooling such as ArgoCD, Istio, or Atmos is required. A demonstrated track record of leveraging AI tools and workflows to materially improve engineering velocity and operational efficiency is necessary. Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively across teams and functions are non-negotiable. Genuine passion for Abridge's mission to improve healthcare in America and across the world is an absolute requirement for this position.
Nice to have
Bonus points apply if you have built or contributed to an internal developer platform at scale. Prior experience with multi-agent orchestration using frameworks such as LangGraph or LangChain is preferred. Experience working in regulated industries or healthcare environments is valued.
Practical notes
This is a hybrid role requiring a minimum of 3 days per week in our San Francisco office, specifically Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Please only apply if you are able to commit to this schedule or are willing to relocate to San Francisco.
