Senior Platform Engineer
Job description
About the role
You will own the design and delivery of internal tools and platforms that accelerate how 9fin engineers build, test, and ship software. You will work across the full software development lifecycle, turning complex workflows into simple, self-service capabilities for your colleagues. This role gives you direct ownership of the developer experience, where your solutions will be adopted by engineers building products for global debt markets. You will partner closely with platform and product teams to identify friction, prototype solutions, and drive measurable improvements in speed and quality. Your work will focus on pragmatic, high-impact changes rather than theoretical platforms. The role is centered on enabling engineers to move fast while maintaining security, reliability, and clarity.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Design and build internal platforms, services, and APIs that remove complexity for software engineers.
- Create and evolve service templates and paved roads that enforce security, observability, and reliability by default.
- Improve the speed and stability of CI/CD pipelines, deployment workflows, and production operations.
- Develop reusable components and self-service tooling so teams can deliver features without repeated coordination.
- Collaborate directly with engineers to understand workflow pain points and validate platform solutions.
- Use workflow and feedback data to assess the impact of platform changes on developer productivity.
- Implement and support observability standards, including logging, metrics, tracing, and service-level indicators.
- Maintain high-quality code, tests, documentation, and operational runbooks for all platform services.
- Work across the software delivery lifecycle from initial design through to production support and iteration.
- Act as a product-minded engineer, prioritising simplicity, adoption, and long-term maintainability.
- Partner with the existing Developer Experience Engineer to scale platform capabilities across the organisation.
- Contribute to architectural decisions that balance delivery speed with operational robustness.
- Translate complex infrastructure concerns into clear developer workflows and documentation.
- Continuously experiment with new tools and processes to improve the engineering experience.
Requirements
- You are a strong software engineer with hands-on experience designing, building, testing, and operating production software.
- You are proficient in at least one modern programming language and care more about engineering fundamentals than specific technologies.
- You understand the software development lifecycle deeply and have a track record of improving how software is built, tested, deployed, or operated.
- You hold strong, well-formed opinions about effective software development while remaining pragmatic across different teams and contexts.
- You can design maintainable systems and make sensible trade-offs between speed, quality, and complexity.
- You have practical experience with CI/CD, containers, and cloud infrastructure to build reliable platform services.
- You enjoy building tools and platforms specifically for other engineers and prioritising their needs.
- You take a product approach to internal tooling, including understanding user needs, validating solutions, and measuring adoption.
- You can independently own problems from discovery through delivery, adoption, and ongoing improvement.
- You communicate clearly through code, documentation, and technical discussions with engineering audiences.
- You have a demonstrable appetite for learning and continuous self-improvement in complex technical domains.
- You are comfortable working in a fast-moving, scaling environment where priorities evolve quickly.
- You are based in London and able to work full-time onsite with the team.
- You understand the importance of reliability, security, and compliance in systems that support critical financial workflows.
- You have experience collaborating cross-functionally with engineers, product managers, and operations teams.
Nice to have
- Experience with AWS and infrastructure as code using tools such as Terraform.
- Background building internal developer platforms, developer portals, CLIs, or service templates.
- Familiarity with observability tools like OpenTelemetry, CloudWatch, or SigNoz.
- Knowledge of reliability engineering practices, incident response, and production operations.
- Experience working in fintech or other regulated environments.
Practical notes
This is a full-time, onsite role based in London. The position requires availability during standard working hours to collaborate closely with engineering teams. Travel is not required as part of this role. The start date will be aligned with business needs and team availability.
