About the role
5W Public Relations is on the lookout for an experienced professional to join our growing Finance team based in New York City. As the Controller, you will be responsible for overseeing all accounting functions to ensure accurate financial reporting, which includes managing the financial closing processes. This role requires you to implement financial controls that are in line with both the company's and department's objectives. You will lead a dedicated accounting team while working collaboratively with colleagues across various departments. The ideal candidate should possess a curious mindset, a strong analytical ability, attention to detail, and a strategic approach to financial management.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Oversee the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial closing processes, ensuring they are conducted efficiently and adhere to US GAAP standards.
- Manage the general ledger, balance sheet, intercompany transactions, reconciliations, revenue streams, fixed assets, and short-term cash flow projections.
- Supervise the accounts receivable and accounts payable functions to ensure accuracy and timeliness.
- Develop and implement relevant metrics and KPIs that align with departmental objectives and timelines.
- Introduce new accounting standards and operational procedures that reflect best practices and updated accounting regulations.
- Assess existing systems, applications, processes, and controls, and suggest improvements and automation opportunities.
- Design internal processes and policies to strengthen and maintain internal controls.
- Enhance key accounting software to ensure it meets the volume and complexity of business requirements.
- Collaborate with department heads to analyze monthly financial data for ongoing forecasting and budgeting.
- Assist in reviewing contracts and documentation as needed.
- Mentor and guide the accounting team, which currently consists of four professionals.
- Serve as an authorized representative for banking transactions, reviewing payment requests and authorizing bank payments; act as the system administrator for banking platforms.
- Participate in and/or oversee various projects and tasks as needed.
Requirements
- A minimum of 8 years of accounting experience in either public or private sectors, or a combination of both; a current CPA certification is preferred.
- At least 3 to 4 years of experience in a Controller position.
- A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline.
- Comprehensive knowledge of US GAAP and the ability to apply these principles effectively in practice.
- Advanced proficiency in MS Excel, including skills in modeling, VLOOKUP, Pivot Tables, and VBA Macros.
- Familiarity with ERP systems, including an understanding of processes, consolidations, and intercompany transactions.
- Experience with standard accounting software platforms; familiarity with NetSuite is highly advantageous.
- Strong follow-up skills to ensure projects and tasks are completed, establishing clear guidelines and expectations.
- Ability to identify challenges and proactively create solutions; enjoys managing multiple projects at once.

- Previous experience in a fast-paced agency environment is a plus.

- The salary range for this position is between $130,000 and $170,000 USD, depending on various factors such as experience and qualifications.
