About the role
You will own the end to end lifecycle of the authentication platform that powers 1Password, driving the design, implementation, and operation of the services that verify user identities and secure access to critical systems. You will partner closely with product and design to translate security requirements into reliable authentication workflows that scale safely across a global user base. Your work will ensure that every sign in and identity verification event is handled with consistency, auditability, and resilience. You will lead the technical strategy for the authentication stack while removing blockers and fostering a culture of engineering excellence. You will mentor engineers, elevate their craft, and enable them to deliver complex features with confidence. You will act as a trusted advisor to cross functional teams on authentication best practices and standards. You will help define the roadmap for the authentication services team and ensure that operational reliability remains a top priority.

What you'll do
Define and drive the technical roadmap for authentication services in collaboration with product and design partners.
Architect and evolve the services, workflows, and infrastructure that power sign in, multi factor authentication, and identity verification at scale.
Partner with senior engineers to translate complex security requirements into reliable and maintainable authentication solutions.
Lead the design and implementation of features across the authentication lifecycle from onboarding to session management.
Establish and enforce standards for authentication reliability, observability, and operational excellence across engineering teams.
Guide and grow a team of engineers by providing technical leadership, career development, and hands on coaching.
Work with cross functional stakeholders to scope and plan deliverables ensuring alignment with business objectives and customer needs.
Drive execution through iterative delivery, focusing on velocity, quality, communication, and measurable outcomes.
Collaborate with support and operations to improve incident response and postmortem processes for authentication related events.
Champion best practices for security, privacy, and compliance within the authentication domain.
Recruit, interview, and onboard strong engineering talent to help scale the authentication services team.
Continuously refine hiring, onboarding, and development processes in partnership with other engineering managers.
Represent 1Password in the broader security and authentication community through talks, writing, and open source contributions where appropriate.
Ensure that authentication capabilities remain easy to adopt and operate for internal teams while maintaining rigorous safety standards.
Lead retrospectives and improvement initiatives to enhance team health, engineering practices, and service reliability.
Requirements
You have several years of experience managing a team of engineers and owning and operating a service in production.
You bring deep experience with cloud native infrastructure and backend technologies to help the team work through complex technical issues.
You are capable of creating and maintaining a positive, healthy team environment where everyone is supported, encouraged, and meaningfully challenged to do great work.
You have a proven track record of driving project delivery and creating roadmaps for future work.
You have helped a team scale both themselves and the services they are responsible for in a fast growing environment.
You have substantial experience managing a remote team and collaborating effectively across distributed time zones.
You communicate clearly and persuasively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
You are comfortable making high impact decisions in ambiguous situations while balancing security, usability, and delivery constraints.
Nice to have
Experience with identity and access management concepts, protocols, and standards.
Familiarity with authentication frameworks, single sign on, and multi factor solutions.
Understanding of security and compliance frameworks relevant to enterprise software.
Experience contributing to open source projects related to authentication or security.
Practical notes
This role is remote within Canada and the United States.
Employment is full time.
Compensation ranges are specified separately for USA based and Canada based roles.
Candidates must be eligible to work in their respective country without sponsorship for this position.
