About the role
This role focuses on the architecture and delivery of automated payment solutions within the Recurring Payin domain. You will take ownership of the Direct Debit API and the systems that enable automated customer top-ups and business collections. The work you perform will directly shape the core payment rails that handle substantial transaction volumes on a global scale. Your responsibility will be to build flexible, automated funding solutions that serve a diverse international user base reliably. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional partners to translate product requirements into robust technical implementations. The work involves balancing innovation with the need for stability, security, and regulatory adherence in financial services. Your contributions will impact how businesses and consumers fund transactions across Wise's ecosystem.

What you'll do
- Architect, build, and support backend services using Java and Kotlin with Spring Boot in an AWS environment.
- Create and manage RESTful APIs that support millions of web and mobile users.
- Improve the card pay-in system, which currently facilitates over 1 billion GBP in monthly transfers.
- Define database schemas and refine SQL queries for PostgreSQL to handle large-scale financial data.
- Manage event-driven workflows using Apache Kafka for distributed financial processing.
- Engineer payment orchestration logic that routes transactions through various providers to improve cost efficiency and uptime.
- Create comprehensive automated test suites covering unit, integration, and end-to-end scenarios.
- Review peer code to uphold high standards for security and engineering quality.
- Join on-call rotations to address production issues for Tier 2 critical services.
- Partner with product, design, and analytics teams to execute cross-functional initiatives.
- Address technical debt and system performance limitations.
- Maintain strict security protocols when processing sensitive financial information and ensure regulatory compliance.
- Monitor system health and reliability to ensure high availability for critical payment flows.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of development practices and deployment pipelines.
Requirements
- You must demonstrate proficiency in Java to write clean, maintainable, and efficient code.
- You must show competence in Kotlin for developing modern and concise backend services.
- You must have hands-on experience with Spring Boot to build production-grade applications.
- You must possess background knowledge of AWS cloud infrastructure and related managed services.
- You must have a history of designing and maintaining RESTful APIs that are scalable and well-documented.
- You must be competent in SQL to write complex queries and optimize database interactions.
- You must have experience with PostgreSQL to manage relational data in a financial context.
- You must be familiar with Apache Kafka to design and troubleshoot event-driven architecture.
- You must be able to participate in on-call rotations for critical services and respond to incidents promptly.
- You must understand the fundamentals of secure software development to protect financial data.
- You must have experience working in an agile environment to adapt to changing priorities.
- You must communicate effectively to collaborate with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
