About the role
You will guide a team of backend and web engineers to improve how customers receive international payments, salaries, and freelance income. This role involves shaping the product roadmap alongside product managers while ensuring our platform remains reliable and scalable for millions of global users. You will own the end-to-end lifecycle of the receive-to-alias experience, turning ambiguous problems into clear technical strategies. You will balance execution speed with long-term architectural health while maintaining a sharp focus on regulatory constraints and data integrity. Your decisions will directly influence how customers perceive the reliability and simplicity of receiving money across borders. You will act as a technical partner to product managers, translating business goals into feasible engineering outcomes.

What you'll do
- Design and evolve the receive-to-alias platform while expanding identifier offerings such as email and phone numbers to support global use cases.
- Define the product roadmap for the upcoming two quarters in partnership with product management, aligning technical dependencies and risk assessments.
- Mentor and grow engineering talent by providing constructive feedback, career guidance, and hands-on code contributions to elevate team quality.
- Coordinate technical efforts across multiple internal teams to deliver value through incremental project milestones and clear ownership boundaries.
- Participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation, typically occurring every 6 to 10 weeks, to ensure timely resolution of critical production incidents.
- Collaborate closely with compliance and operations stakeholders to implement controls that meet financial regulations without degrading user experience.
- Break down complex product initiatives into smaller, deliverable milestones that enable continuous integration, testing, and safe deployment.
- Drive the adoption of best practices in coding, testing, and peer code reviews to maintain a sustainable pace of development.
- Optimize system performance and reliability by analyzing metrics, identifying bottlenecks, and prioritizing improvements with measurable impact.
- Explore and prototype new technologies where appropriate, ensuring that innovations align with Wise's standards for security and scalability.
- Communicate progress, trade-offs, and dependencies to both technical and non-technical stakeholders using clear and precise language.
- Ensure that all delivered features include adequate monitoring, alerting, and rollback strategies to protect customers and operations.
- Maintain a strong product mindset by challenging assumptions, validating hypotheses with data, and prioritizing work that resolves real user pain points.
- Support the deployment and operation of services in production, including troubleshooting, incident response, and post-incident reviews.
Requirements
- Demonstrate proven experience leading engineering teams and scaling products within a production environment, with a track record of delivering reliable software.
- Show a strong product mindset, using data-driven decision-making to resolve user pain points and validate the impact of proposed solutions.
- Communicate technical concepts clearly to non-technical stakeholders, enabling informed decision-making across the organization.
- Build and maintain web applications and distributed systems that are secure, performant, and easy to operate at scale.

salary: 105k - 135k GBP plus RSUs.
