About the role
Wise is on the lookout for an Engineering Lead to spearhead its Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) team. This pivotal team plays a vital role in overseeing transactions and customer interactions to detect and mitigate any misuse of the platform. In this position, you will be instrumental in transitioning the team's strategy from a policy-centric model to a risk-oriented framework, which will empower legitimate activities while effectively targeting and addressing illicit behaviors.

What you'll do
- Direct a diverse, cross-functional team comprised of data scientists, analysts, compliance managers, and designers to achieve AUP objectives.
- Work closely with Product Managers, Compliance Leads, and Lead Data Scientists to establish both technical and product visions that align with business goals.
- Improve risk detection mechanisms by incorporating machine learning models and developing controls to pinpoint AUP violations effectively.
- Create automated workflows and internal tools aimed at enhancing operational efficiency and minimizing case handling durations.
- Ensure the availability, resilience, and security of services by implementing robust monitoring, observability, and scalable architecture solutions.
- Foster a collaborative environment that encourages innovation and the sharing of ideas among team members.
- Regularly review and refine processes to ensure they align with industry best practices and regulatory requirements.
- Mentor and guide team members to enhance their technical skills and career development within the organization.
Requirements
- Proven experience in leading, mentoring, and nurturing software engineers in an agile environment, ideally in a role such as Tech Lead or Engineering Manager.
- A solid engineering foundation with proficiency in modern programming languages and a working knowledge of frontend frameworks, particularly React and TypeScript.
- Demonstrated experience in designing, deploying, and managing scalable, concurrent microservices within a cloud infrastructure, with an understanding of high-throughput message processing and asynchronous workflows.
- A mindset focused on product and risk management, with the ability to prioritize business impact and comprehend operational challenges, translating policy requirements into actionable engineering tasks.
- Exceptional communication skills to effectively align engineers, data scientists, and non-technical stakeholders around a unified technical vision.
- A proactive approach to problem-solving, with a strong emphasis on collaboration and teamwork.
Nice to have
- Prior experience in the FinTech sector, particularly in areas related to financial crime prevention such as AML, sanctions, fraud, or policy enforcement.
- Experience working alongside Data Scientists to implement and scale machine learning models in a production environment.
- Familiarity with cloud infrastructure and contemporary DevOps tools, including AWS, Terraform, Kubernetes, and GitHub Actions.
- Background in developing or optimizing high-volume case management systems or operational back-office solutions.
- Being a current Wise customer can provide valuable insights into the user experience and platform functionalities.
