Software Engineer II, Client Platform

The company seeks a Software Engineer II (Full Stack Web) to join the Client Platform team, concentrating on Design Systems and Translations. In this capacity, you will architect and construct shared frontend and backend systems. These systems will enable WHOOP to deliver experiences that are consistent, high quality, and accessible worldwide. Your work will span the entire stack, from frontend component libraries to backend localization services. You will also contribute to the infrastructure and tooling that power design systems and internationalization at scale.
This position is ideal for an engineer who thrives on web technologies while embracing platform challenges. Key challenges include design system consistency, localization workflows, and right-to-left (RTL) support. You will play a pivotal role in enabling global expansion. You will make it straightforward for teams to build localized, accessible, and visually coherent experiences.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain full stack systems that power WHOOP's design system and translation infrastructure.
- Develop and maintain reusable frontend components and shared libraries using modern frameworks such as React and TypeScript.
- Implement and enhance internationalization (i18n) support, including right-to-left (RTL) layouts and bidirectional text handling.
- Partner with the Design team to build and scale a unified design system across web and mobile platforms.
- Build and maintain backend services and APIs that support translation workflows, content delivery, and localization pipelines.
- Ensure UI components are flexible, accessible, and adaptable to different languages, screen sizes, and regions.
- Improve and maintain build and CI/CD systems, including CircleCI and GitHub Actions, to support fast and reliable delivery.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Product, Design, Platform, and Localization teams to deliver scalable solutions.
- Participate in code reviews and contribute to best practices regarding frontend architecture, localization, and design systems.
- Analyze and solve complex problems related to component performance, scalability, and maintainability in a global context.
- Define and enforce standards for component behavior, accessibility, and internationalization across engineering teams.
- Collaborate with data and analytics partners to instrument and measure the impact of design system and localization initiatives.
- Mentor junior engineers on best practices for frontend development, i18n, and design system contribution.
- Stay current with emerging frontend technologies, design system patterns, and localization tooling to recommend improvements.
- Drive technical execution for high-impact projects that enhance the global member experience.
Requirements
- Two to four years of professional software engineering experience.
- Proficiency in web development using JavaScript or TypeScript, along with React and Node.js.
- Experience building and integrating RESTful APIs.
- Familiarity with frontend architecture and the creation of reusable UI components or design systems.
- Experience with design implementation, translating mockups from tools like Figma into production interfaces.
- Understanding of internationalization (i18n) and localization best practices.
- Familiarity with CSS, responsive design, and modern layout techniques.
- Experience with relational databases such as PostgreSQL or MySQL.
- Experience working with build systems and CI/CD tools like CircleCI and GitHub Actions.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Experience implementing RTL support using CSS logical properties and direction-based styling.
- Familiarity with bidirectional (BiDi) text handling and localization edge cases.
- Experience with design system tooling, such as Storybook, or cross-platform component libraries.
- Exposure to translation platforms or localization pipelines.
- Exposure to design tokens and managing tokens for color modes and multiple themes.
- Backend experience in languages such as Java, Python, or C#.
- Familiarity with cloud delivery platforms like Cloudflare, Vercel, or CloudFront.
- Experience with accessibility standards (WCAG) and inclusive design.
About the Location and Compensation
This role is based in the WHOOP office located in Boston, MA. The successful candidate must be prepared to relocate if necessary to work out of the Boston, MA office.
