About the role
You will own the development and maintenance of member-facing Android features that directly influence health outcomes and user engagement. In this role, you will extend WHOOP's generative AI capabilities to create intelligent, responsive experiences on mobile. You will collaborate daily with product engineers, designers, and product managers to refine the user journey. Your work will ensure that insights delivered to members are timely, accurate, and impactful. You will contribute to the full lifecycle of feature development from ideation through launch. You will help members better understand their bodies, optimize performance, and navigate their health journey with clarity. This role requires empathy for the member experience and a commitment to quality in every release.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Utilize knowledge of Kotlin and Java to develop and maintain product features while communicating seamlessly with a RESTful backend.
- Lead and contribute to new feature ideation, planning, and development from initial concept through production deployment.
- Work with Product Engineers to devise robust solutions for challenges across the WHOOP system and align technical execution with product goals.
- Document new features and architecture to ensure clarity, maintainability, and scalability for future engineering efforts.
- Analyze and monitor user metrics and feedback to determine crash rates and potential bugs, driving improvements in engagement and retention.
- Participate in the release process including getting the app built, managing build variants, signing, sending and testing through Firebase, and submitting to the App store.
- Self-organize using productivity tools such as Jira, Confluence, and GitHub to track progress and maintain high standards of delivery.
- Apply best-practice mobile architecture and modular design, leveraging patterns such as MVVM and MVI to ensure clean separation of concerns.
- Communicate effectively with a RESTful backend, integrating APIs and handling data serialization with reliability and performance in mind.
- Leverage frameworks such as Coroutines, Android Jetpack libraries (including ViewModel, Flows, and Navigation), Room database, and Retrofit / OkHttp to build responsive and maintainable features.
- Experience using Git to organize feature work, manage branching strategies, and collaborate effectively within a distributed team environment.
- Ensure that all Android application structure and components adhere to lifecycle best practices and Android Design Guidelines.
- Build, test, debug, and deliver native Android apps in a professional environment, maintaining high standards of quality and reliability.
- Contribute to a culture of learning and rapid growth across Android systems, embracing new tools, techniques, and architectural patterns.
Requirements
- Product minded engineer with empathy for the member experience and a user-first approach to building software.
- Possess a strong willingness to learn and grow rapidly across Android and external systems, adapting to evolving requirements and technologies.
- Experience in Android application structure and components as well as lifecycle and Android Design Guidelines.
- Experience in building, testing, debugging, and delivering native Android apps in a professional environment.
- Knowledge of Kotlin and frameworks such as Coroutines, Android Jetpack libraries (including ViewModel, Flows, and Navigation), Room database, and Retrofit / OkHttp.
- Well-versed in communicating with a RESTful backend, including handling authentication, request/response parsing, and error management.
- Experience using Git to organize feature work, manage commits, and maintain a clean version history.
- Experience using best-practice mobile architecture and modular design, including patterns such as MVVM, MVI, and other proven architectural approaches.
Practical notes
This role is based in the WHOOP office located in Boston, MA. The successful candidate must be prepared to relocate if necessary to work out of the Boston, MA office.

The U.S. base salary range for this full-time position is $105,000-$145,000. Salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within each range, individual pay is based on factors such as job-related skills, experience, performance, and relevant education or training.
These ranges may be modified in the future to reflect evolving market conditions and organizational needs. While most offers will typically fall toward the starting point of the range, total compensation will depend on the candidate's specific qualifications, expertise, and alignment with the role's requirements.
