Senior - Principal Engineer

About the role

You will lead complex water system hydraulic evaluations and master planning initiatives that define project outcomes for public agency clients. You will own the technical direction of water distribution system analysis using advanced commercial modeling platforms and ensure alignment with client objectives. You will guide senior and other engineers through project execution while maintaining rigorous QA/QC standards across all deliverables. You will serve as a trusted technical advisor during direct client interactions and play a key role in shaping regional water system strategies. You will translate intricate supply, demand, and infrastructure data into clear master plans and concise reports for decision-makers. You will contribute to the growth of the firm's Water Business Sector through thought leadership and innovative solutions. You will support business development by assisting in proposal creation and reinforcing West Yost's reputation for reliable engineering.

What you'll do

Analyze water distribution systems through detailed hydraulic modeling to evaluate performance under varied operating conditions.

Evaluate water use, population trends, water quality indicators, and facilities condition data to inform supply and infrastructure decisions.

Develop water supply and water system capital improvement programs that align with long-term agency goals and regulatory requirements.

Prepare technical reports, plan documents, and master plans that communicate complex engineering concepts to clients and stakeholders.

Serve as a project manager directing hydraulic modeling and master planning work for senior and other engineering staff.

Utilize CAD, GIS, and hydraulic modeling software such as InfoWater Pro, OpenFlows WaterGEMS, and Aquanuity to build reliable system solutions.

Provide QA/QC review on the work of others in the water planning team to ensure accuracy, consistency, and compliance.

Interact directly with clients to understand objectives, manage expectations, and deliver high-level customer service.

Support marketing activities and proposal development by contributing technical expertise and project insights.

Collaborate with colleagues across California and Oregon, with an emphasis on Southern California-based projects and client engagements.

Apply professional judgment to balance technical rigor with practical implementation constraints.

Champion continuous improvement by adopting new methods and tools that enhance the quality of water system planning.

Act as a technical resource for less experienced team members to elevate overall project execution.

Represent West Yost in professional forums and discussions that advance water sector best practices.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Civil/Environmental Engineering from an accredited institution.

10+ years of experience with Water System Planning and Hydraulic Modeling in a professional engineering capacity.

Valid Professional Engineer (PE) licensure in the State of California; PE licensure in other states where the firm practices may also be considered.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills to convey technical information clearly and professionally.

Strong proficiency with CAD, GIS, and hydraulic modeling software such as InfoWater Pro.

Demonstrated ability to process accurate engineering calculations and prepare detailed reports with minimal supervision.

Proven capability to summarize technical information using proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling for reader-friendly clarity.

Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced project environment.

Willingness to travel to other offices and/or client offices as required by project demands.

This position may require out-of-office travel with occasional evening and overnight assignments.

Candidates must be eligible to work in the United States without requiring work authorization sponsorship for this position.

Nice to have

Master's degree in Civil/Environmental Engineering or a related field.

Experience with direct client interaction and formal proposal writing.

High proficiency with InfoWater PRO and prior experience with Aquanuity software.

Proven ability to manage complex projects with competing demands.

Commitment to maintaining professional competency through continuing education, professional publications, and society meetings.

Practical notes

This role may require travel to other offices and client locations.

Occasional evening and overnight travel may be required.

Employment eligibility to work in the United States is required.

Compensation range for this position in Irvine, CA is $119,040 to $192,420.
