Senior Engineer - Treatment

About the role

You will own the planning, permitting, and design of water and wastewater treatment and recycled water systems from initial concept through final construction documents. You will act as the Engineer of Record and task manager, leading multi-disciplinary teams while maintaining technical accuracy and meeting client expectations. You will prepare analyses, equipment evaluations, and cost estimates that define project scope and feasibility. You will engage directly with clients, negotiate contracts and change orders, and mentor junior staff to elevate the entire Treatment practice. You will coordinate site visits, review constructability, and provide ongoing technical support throughout construction to ensure successful project delivery. You will balance multiple concurrent projects and contribute to business development by preparing proposals that reflect technical excellence. You will communicate clearly with clients and subconsultants to align design intent and resolve project challenges.

What you'll do

Perform planning, permitting, and design for water and/or wastewater treatment and recycled water systems while serving as the primary task manager for project execution.

Serve as Engineer of Record responsible for master plans, detailed drawings, specifications, and accurate cost estimates that guide project decisions.

Prepare analyses, calculations, and equipment evaluations for treatment plants and recycled water systems to inform design alternatives and selection.

Assist in developing technical memoranda, preliminary design reports, and other documentation that clearly communicates design improvements to stakeholders.

Coordinate the work of multi-disciplinary teams throughout design development and contract document phases to ensure alignment and efficiency.

Review product designs and drawings for strict compliance with engineering principles, firm standards, client contract requirements, and all relevant specifications.

Engage in professional communication, project administration, task budget tracking, and staffing planning to maintain project health and client satisfaction.

Interact directly with clients throughout project lifecycles and coordinate with subconsultants to integrate expertise and manage expectations.

Assist in preparing and negotiating contracts and change orders to reflect scope, value, and agreement terms that support project success.

Conduct site visits, synthesize findings, and generate reports with actionable recommendations that address field conditions and design intent.

Provide hands-on technical support during construction to resolve issues, verify installations, and uphold design integrity.

Review constructability of design projects to identify potential challenges and optimize solutions before finalization.

Work effectively on several projects simultaneously, managing priorities, deliverables, and stakeholder expectations.

Assist with the preparation of proposals by gathering technical data, cost information, and conceptual solutions that demonstrate firm capabilities.

Mentor and coach staff at various experience levels to foster professional growth, technical excellence, and team cohesion.

Requirements

Bachelor's or Master's degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering, or a related field that provides the necessary technical foundation for treatment systems.

10 or more years of experience with technical expertise in water and/or wastewater treatment and recycled water systems planning, permitting, and design.

Proven experience completing master plans and detailed designs while actively managing projects and delivering superior client service.

Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly in writing and speaking, ensuring technical information is accessible to clients and team members.

Strong interest in expanding the current client base through relationship building, solution development, and trusted advisory engagement.

Desire and capacity to build and lead a top-level team by coaching, mentoring, and aligning staff with project and firm goals.

Commitment to working closely with firm Principals to identify opportunities, refine solutions, and uphold the highest standards of quality.

Ability to travel to other West Yost offices and client offices as required to support project needs and firm collaboration.

Practical notes

This is a Hybrid role requiring 3 days in the office and 2 days remote.

Travel to other offices and/or client sites may be required.

This position is based in Reno, Nevada, and is eligible for the stated compensation range.
