Project Overview

The Hydrus Project seeks native-level German speakers from Germany who possess professional voice recording capabilities to contribute to a production initiative. This opportunity requires participants to complete recording work from their personal home studios. The project design validates two critical elements simultaneously: the quality of your voice and the suitability of your recording environment. All audio generated will proceed directly into production use. Successful applicants must demonstrate reliability across both technical and performance criteria.

Your Responsibilities

Your role involves active participation in two distinct recording sessions scheduled at your convenience. Each session will run for approximately four hours. During the process, you will provide audio for natural conversational exchanges, respond to prompted discussion topics, and perform scripted customer-service interactions. All recording activities will be conducted using your own home studio setup. Prior to the main sessions, you must submit two audition samples, each lasting 30 seconds, using your designated recording equipment. Approval of these samples is a prerequisite for scheduling the main project work.

Required Recording Environment

The project maintains strict standards for audio capture, requiring three specific elements, each evaluated independently. First, you must utilize an external microphone; integrated or built-in devices are strictly prohibited. Acceptable options include dedicated dynamic microphones such as the Shure SM58, Shure MV7 or MV7+, RODE PodMic or PodMic USB, and similar models. Condenser microphones are permitted only if the room is professionally treated; examples include the RODE NT-USB Mini, Blue Yeti or Yeti Orb, Blue Bluebird, and Blue Baby Bottle.

Second, your recording space must be acoustically dry. Your voice should capture with a close and clear quality, avoiding any echo or hollow, distant sound characteristics. Rooms with untreated walls, hard flooring surfaces, and high ceilings typically fail to meet these standards.

Third, the environment must ensure complete quiet during recording sessions. This means the absence of HVAC system hum, fan noise, traffic sounds, appliance operation, or any other household disturbances at any point during recording.

Technical Requirements

To participate, you must be capable of producing audio files that meet precise technical specifications. Exports must be in WAV format, utilizing a 24-bit depth and a 48 kHz sample rate. No compression is permitted. Standard freeware applications like Audacity can fulfill this requirement. If you are unable to generate audio in this specific format, you should not proceed with an application, as this technical proficiency is non-negotiable for the role.

Candidate Profile

The ideal contributor is a native-level speaker of German as spoken in Germany. The desired speaking style is natural, authentic, friendly, and aligned with customer-service dialogue. A proven, quiet home recording space equipped with a professional-grade microphone, as detailed in the requirements, is essential. While not mandatory, background experience in related fields is beneficial. This includes individuals with histories in podcasting, YouTube content creation, live streaming, music recording, or professional voice-over performance.

Compensation and Commitment

The project offers a compensation rate of $48.00 USD for each hour of work. The estimated total time commitment is approximately eight hours, distributed across the two scheduled recording sessions. This engagement is structured as a freelance, remote opportunity.
