About the Project

The Hydrus Project seeks native-level French speakers from Quebec with professional voice recording experience. The project includes two scheduled recording sessions conducted from the contributor's own home studio. Because the recordings go straight into production, the audition process evaluates both the voice and the recording environment equally.

What You'll Do

You will audition by submitting two 30-second audio samples using your home studio setup. Upon approval, you will complete two scheduled recording sessions, each lasting approximately four hours. During these sessions, you will engage in natural conversation, respond to prompted discussion topics, and perform scripted customer-service scenarios. All recording must take place from your own home studio setup across both sessions.

Your Recording Environment

Three environmental factors are assessed separately and are all required. First, you need an external microphone; built-in laptop microphones, phone microphones, AirPods, Samsung Buds, headphone-attached microphones, headsets, and gaming headsets are not permitted. Acceptable options include dynamic microphones such as the Shure SM58, Shure MV7 or MV7+, RODE PodMic or PodMic USB, or similar models. Condenser microphones are acceptable only if used in a treated room; examples include the RODE NT-USB Mini, Blue Yeti or Yeti Orb, Blue Bluebird, and Blue Baby Bottle.

Second, your room must be dry, meaning your voice should sound close and clear. The room must not produce echo or a hollow, distant quality. Untreated rooms with bare walls, hard floors, and high ceilings typically fail this requirement.

Third, the room must be quiet. Recording cannot take place with HVAC hum, fans, traffic, appliances, or any household noise present.

Technical Specifications

You must be able to produce audio samples that meet specific technical standards. Exports must be in WAV format, 24-bit depth, 48 kHz sample rate, and contain no compression. Free software such as Audacity can be used to create files in this format. If you cannot export audio in this specification, you should not apply, as this level of technical compliance is mandatory for the role.

Who We Are Looking For

The ideal candidate is a native-level French speaker from Quebec. The desired speaking style is natural, authentic, friendly, and conversational, suitable for customer-service scenarios. A dry, quiet home recording space and an external professional microphone, as outlined above, are mandatory requirements. Background experience is not required but is helpful; this includes podcasters, YouTubers, streamers, recording artists, or voice-over actors who have experience managing high-quality home studio recordings.

Compensation and Commitment

The estimated time commitment is approximately eight hours in total, spread across two scheduled sessions. Compensation is set at $55.00 USD per hour.
