About the role
This position is NOT contingent upon awarding of a project or needing a funding source. This is full-time employment with webAI. The Edge AI Systems Engineer will own the design and delivery of production-ready AI systems for secure and distributed environments within public sector initiatives. You will operate at the intersection of real-world tactical hardware, machine learning, signals processing, and multisensor engineering, translating complex requirements into autonomous field deployments. In this role, you will be responsible for deploying and prototyping AI models into embedded hardware systems for government edge environments that are often restricted and/or disconnected from conventional networks. The ideal candidate will be based in Austin, Texas and able to work primarily in person, with the Company considering Washington, D.C./Northern Virginia locations or fully remote arrangements on a case-by-case basis for exceptionally qualified candidates. You will be expected to travel to the Austin, Texas headquarters when required for critical project milestones or team collaboration.

What you'll do
Coordinate with AI and Network Software Engineers to design low-latency multi-node communication frameworks in restricted and/or disconnected environments.
Quantize, compile, and deploy real-time multi-agent pipelines to ensure readiness across diverse edge architectures.
Develop algorithms for asynchronous multimodal data fusion, tracking, and signal processing to handle heterogeneous input streams.
Architect and maintain high-fidelity Hardware-in-the-Loop simulation environments to test and validate autonomy algorithms under realistic conditions.
Lead the physical assembly, system calibration, and ruggedized field-testing of multi-node prototypes in unstructured and challenging operational settings.
Perform rigorous optimization of compute, memory, and power budgets to meet strict SWaP-C constraints for deployed solutions.
Implement robust data ingestion and cross-platform pipelines that support both x86 and Jetson/ARM64 hardware families in distributed topologies.
Conduct comprehensive validation and performance profiling of edge AI workloads to ensure reliability and deterministic behavior in field conditions.
Collaborate with defense and tactical systems experts to align software integration efforts with open architecture standards and operational best practices.
Document system designs, test procedures, and deployment playbooks to support long-term maintainability and knowledge transfer.
Drive continuous improvement by iterating on field feedback to enhance the performance and usability of edge AI systems over time.
Requirements
Active US Security clearance is mandatory for this position and must be maintained throughout employment.
Bring 6+ years of professional experience in RF and networking architecture, tactical radio systems, physical bench-test simulation environments, and distributed middleware.
Hands-on experience with at least two of the following domains: embedded & edge AI systems, computer vision, signal processing, multimedia pipelines, and custom hardware integration.
Demonstrate a strong understanding of physical SWaP-C optimization, network partitioning, multi-stream ingestion, and cross-platform development across x86 and Jetson/ARM64 architectures.
Show deep fluency in Python and C++, along with expert-level proficiency in Linux development environments and tooling.
Hold a Bachelor's degree in a relevant field, or possess equivalent practical experience gained through military service or other professional achievements.
Advanced field experience in similar roles is heavily preferred and will strengthen your candidacy significantly.
Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States without requiring sponsorship for employment-based visas at this time.
Nice to have
Experience developing, testing, or deploying autonomous software on tactical military or defense systems that adhere to open architecture standards.
Proven experience conducting field validation, site calibration, or operational testing of edge networks and ruggedized hardware within civilian commercial or tactical defense environments.
Practical notes
Qualified candidates who are not based in Austin, Texas may be asked to travel to our Austin, Texas headquarters.
The position requires availability for work in the Washington D.C. Area on a full-time basis, with standard working hours as determined by business needs.
Travel to the Austin, Texas headquarters may be required periodically to support project objectives and team collaboration.
