Principal ML - GenAI Engineer

About the role

We are seeking a to own the technical vision and delivery of voice and audio GenAI capabilities that power core customer experiences. In this role, you will define how cross-functional teams design, build, and operate AI features that scale reliably for thousands of healthcare practices. You will act as a hands-on technical leader, translating complex ML concepts into practical product outcomes while mentoring engineers to raise the bar of quality and reliability. Your work will directly influence the architecture of platforms that enable seamless integration of intelligence into every customer interaction. You will be responsible for shaping standards, patterns, and guardrails that allow teams to move quickly without sacrificing robustness or security. Success in this position will be measured by the scalability of the ML infrastructure and the quality of AI-driven experiences delivered to our customers.

What you'll do

• Design and evolve the ML infrastructure and tooling that allows product teams to integrate AI features rapidly and reliably.
• Build internal platforms and products that abstract complexity and enable engineers to add voice and audio intelligence with minimal friction.
• Translate ambiguous product goals into concrete technical roadmaps and scalable services for data ingestion, processing, and event streaming.
• Partner with engineering managers and staff engineers to define architectural standards and ensure coherence across the data and AI/ML fellowship.
• Consult with product and development teams on ML lifecycle best practices, data governance, and tradeoffs between experimentation and production readiness.
• Elevate engineering standards by writing, reviewing, and mentoring on high-quality, testable, and maintainable code in cloud-native environments.
• Monitor advances in GenAI, voice, and audio technologies to identify opportunities that can deliver strategic differentiation for healthcare customers.
• Cut through market noise to focus on genuine technical leverage, leading initiatives that prepare Weave for future demands and regulatory shifts.
• Shape and enforce company-wide standards for observability, reliability, and security in distributed ML systems.
• Mentor senior and staff engineers, elevating their architectural thinking and enabling them to lead complex, customer-facing ML initiatives.

Requirements

• Bring 12+ years of software engineering experience with expanding technical leadership responsibilities across teams and products.
• Demonstrate a proven track record of building and operating ML-driven B2B multi-tenant applications at scale for external customers.
• Show deep expertise in distributed systems architecture, designing and running services that handle massive scale in throughput and data volume.
• Offer 15+ years of hands-on experience in Machine Learning or AI, with a strong focus on audio and voice GenAI solutions deployed in production.
• Exhibit deep fluency with modern ML tools including LLMs, RAG, prompt engineering, fine-tuning, and evaluation methods tailored for high-scale audio and voice models.
• Maintain a strong background in scalable data stores, including relational systems like PostgreSQL at scale, as well as NoSQL options such as Bigtable and Redis.
• Operate confidently in cloud-native environments on GCP or AWS, leveraging Kubernetes, infrastructure-as-code, and resilient system design patterns.
• Display a history of leading cross-functional technical programs that shipped measurable business outcomes and removed integration bottlenecks.
• Show the ability to influence stakeholders without direct authority, build consensus across diverse teams, and communicate technical tradeoffs in business-friendly language.

Nice to have

• Expertise deploying and operating customer-facing GenAI in production at scale with strict uptime and quality expectations.
• Hands-on experience building low-latency, high-accuracy AI agents that handle complex reasoning and stateful interactions.
• Deep background in audio or voice GenAI in production, with concrete examples of delivering solutions to external customers at scale.
• Experience working in compliance-heavy industries such as healthcare or fintech, navigating regulatory constraints and data governance requirements.
