About the role
You will own the end to end execution of water and wastewater process design packages for municipal and industrial clients while ensuring all deliverables meet stringent quality standards and regulatory compliance. You will lead multidisciplinary teams by providing technical direction, facilitating design reviews, and coordinating with engineering disciplines to resolve complex hydraulic and treatment process challenges. You will act as the primary technical contact for clients, translating their needs into actionable engineering solutions and maintaining clear communication throughout project lifecycles. You will develop innovative process layouts that optimize efficiency, sustainability, and resiliency for large scale infrastructure systems. You will mentor junior engineers by guiding their professional growth, reviewing their work, and fostering a collaborative learning environment. You will contribute to the growth of our water sector capabilities by identifying new service lines and opportunities for technical expansion. You will uphold our corporate standards by implementing best in class documentation practices and knowledge management initiatives. You will participate in business development efforts by preparing compelling technical proposals and conceptual designs that win new work.

What you'll do
Perform comprehensive hydraulic and process calculations for extensive piping networks, valve configurations, and pumping arrangements to ensure system reliability and efficiency.
Design treatment technology solutions that address specific water quality objectives, regulatory limits, and operational constraints for diverse client applications.
Develop detailed process flow diagrams and P and IDs that clearly illustrate unit operations, material paths, and control strategies for construction and procurement.
Evaluate existing infrastructure performance and identify optimization opportunities through data analysis, field assessments, and diagnostic testing.
Lead the preparation of design specifications, scope documents, and technical narratives that align project goals with client expectations and regulatory requirements.
Coordinate with mechanical, civil, and instrumentation engineers to integrate process systems into broader facility layouts and control frameworks.
Support the development of cost estimates, equipment schedules, and material takeoffs to facilitate accurate project budgeting and procurement planning.
Champion the application of sustainable treatment technologies and water conservation strategies that reduce energy use and lifecycle costs for clients.
Conduct reviews and quality checks of engineering deliverables to verify accuracy, completeness, and adherence to industry standards and internal protocols.
Present technical findings and design recommendations to clients, consultants, and regulatory stakeholders through clear reports, diagrams, and verbal communication.
Collaborate with field operations teams to translate design assumptions into practical installation and commissioning procedures.
Investigate emerging treatment methodologies and digital tools that enhance process performance, reliability, and adaptability to future regulatory changes.
Mentor cross functional team members by providing guidance on engineering analysis, design techniques, and professional development opportunities.
Participate in business development initiatives by contributing technically focused content for proposals, presentations, and client meetings.
Requirements
Candidates must hold a professional engineering license in civil or environmental engineering, demonstrating verified competence in responsible charge for public safety and engineering decisions.
A bachelor's degree in civil or environmental engineering is required, and the combination of education and experience must meet the threshold of ten to fifteen years of related process engineering experience in water and wastewater sectors.
You must possess deep expertise in large scale piping systems, including selection, sizing, pressure loss analysis, and material compatibility for harsh fluids.
You must have hands on experience with complex valve technologies, including actuation methods, performance characteristics, and application in process control loops.
You must understand pumping systems theory, including hydraulic performance curves, system head calculations, and selection for varied process conditions.
You must be proficient in evaluating and specifying water and wastewater treatment technologies, including biological, membrane, chemical, and physical treatment processes.
You must demonstrate superior written communication skills, producing clear, accurate, and concise technical documents, reports, and specifications for diverse audiences.
You must excel in organizational skills, managing multiple project tasks, deadlines, and deliverables while maintaining meticulous attention to detail and documentation integrity.
Nice to have
Preferred experience with water sector projects that involve biological nutrient removal, disinfection systems, or sludge processing technologies.
Experience supporting leadership development initiatives, mentor relationships, or professional growth programs within a technical services environment.
Practical notes
This role operates under full time employment guidelines, and remote hybrid schedules are permitted after a thirty day introductory period.
Travel is not required for this position, and candidates must be prepared to work from one of our Michigan offices located in Detroit.
