What you'll do
- Serve as the primary metallurgical authority within the analysis and testing team, offering expertise on material performance, failure investigations, and process-related challenges.
- Collaborate with colleagues to develop comprehensive analysis and testing strategies that enhance process development, ensure quality control, and validate products.
- Examine and interpret microstructural features, plating quality, and coating integrity utilizing advanced techniques such as optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS).
- Effectively communicate findings to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, using micrographs and relevant data to support your conclusions.
- Identify opportunities for improvement in laboratory facilities, equipment, and testing methodologies, implementing enhancements as needed.
- Design and fabricate basic mechanical fixtures and electronic controls to facilitate laboratory tasks and testing procedures.
- Perform routine maintenance and repairs on laboratory equipment and facilities to ensure optimal functionality.
- Keep detailed records of methods, results, and any deviations in compliance with quality system standards.
Requirements
- A Bachelor's degree or higher in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, or Metallurgy is mandatory. No other degrees will be considered.
- Approximately 10 years of relevant industry experience as a metallurgist or in materials and processes engineering. Academic experience cannot replace industry experience.
- In-depth knowledge of metallic materials and processes, with expertise in at least three of the following areas: heat treatment, surface treatment, plating, mechanics of materials, materials testing, and metals processing.
- Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to engage in hands-on tasks, including the creation of simple electronic or mechanical controls and performing basic repairs on laboratory equipment.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, capable of effectively presenting metallurgical findings to a variety of audiences.
Candidates must be U.S. Persons due to the necessity of accessing U.S. export-controlled information or facilities.
Nice to have
- Experience with metallographic preparation and microstructural analysis techniques, including optical microscopy and SEM/EDS.
- Familiarity with materials and processes in the defense, aerospace, or automotive sectors.
- Knowledge of powder metallurgy, sintered materials, or the production of permanent magnets.
- Experience with quality management systems such as AS9100, ISO 17025, or NADCAP.
- Understanding of failure analysis techniques and root cause investigations.
- Background in corrosion assessment, electrochemistry, or evaluation of protective coatings.
