Member of the Technical Staff, Internal Agent
Job description
About the role
Vercel is looking for a Member of the Technical Staff to join their Internal Agent team. This role focuses on designing and building AI-powered agents that improve how Vercel teams work internally. The position is fully remote and based in the United States. You will collaborate with engineers and product leaders across the organization to ship reliable agent systems.
Key facts
What you'll do
Design and implement internal agent workflows that automate repetitive engineering and operational tasks at Vercel. Build reliable pipelines that connect large language models to Vercel internal tools and data sources. Write clean, well-tested code for agent orchestration and execution frameworks used by internal teams. Collaborate with cross-functional partners to identify high-impact problems suitable for agent-based solutions. Evaluate and iterate on agent performance metrics to ensure systems meet reliability and accuracy standards. Contribute to shared infrastructure and libraries that other teams can reuse when building their own agents. Document agent behaviors, decision logic, and failure modes so internal users understand how the systems operate. Participate in code reviews and architectural discussions to maintain high standards across the Internal Agent codebase. Monitor agent deployments in production and respond to incidents or degradation in agent behavior. Research new techniques in agentic AI and recommend approaches that could improve internal workflows at Vercel.
Requirements
Strong experience building production software systems, preferably with a focus on agentic or AI-driven architectures. Proficiency in Python or TypeScript, with the ability to write maintainable and well-structured code. Familiarity with large language model APIs and experience integrating them into internal tooling or applications. A bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience. At least five years of professional software engineering experience. Comfort working independently in a remote environment with minimal supervision. Experience designing and operating distributed systems that handle concurrent requests and state management. Good communication skills for explaining technical decisions to both engineering and non-engineering stakeholders. Understanding of prompt engineering techniques and how to structure prompts for reliable agent behavior. Track record of delivering complex technical projects from concept through production deployment.
Nice to have
Experience with Vercel's platform products such as Next.js or the Vercel AI SDK is a plus. Familiarity with vector databases or retrieval-augmented generation pipelines for building knowledge-grounded agents. Background in building internal developer tools or platform engineering teams at scale. Contributions to open source projects related to AI, agents, or LLM tooling. Experience with evaluation frameworks for measuring agent task completion rates and correctness. Knowledge of security best practices for agents that interact with sensitive internal data or APIs.
Skills & tools
Python for agent logic, workflow orchestration, and data processing pipelines. TypeScript for building internal agent interfaces and integration layers. Large language model APIs including OpenAI and Anthropic models. Vector databases such as Pinecone or Weaviate for agent memory and retrieval. Prompt engineering frameworks and techniques for structuring reliable agent instructions. Git-based version control and collaborative development workflows. Containerization and deployment tooling for running agent services in production. Observability tools for monitoring agent behavior, latency, and error rates in production.
Practical notes
This is a full-time remote position open to candidates based in the United States. Vercel offers a competitive compensation package and benefits for full-time employees. The Internal Agent team works closely with engineering, product, and operations teams across the company. You will have the opportunity to shape how AI agents are used internally at a leading frontend platform company. Vercel values thoughtful experimentation and encourages team members to prototype new agent ideas quickly. The role involves regular async communication and occasional synchronous collaboration with distributed team members.
