About the role

The is entrusted with owning and directing site-level safety and environmental strategy for the Torrance, California location. This position requires the design, implementation, and active management of all environmental, health, and safety programs to ensure rigorous compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. The manager serves as the key decision-maker whose actions directly shape operational execution, regulatory standing, and the long-term risk profile of the site. Success in this role demands hands-on leadership and proactive engagement with internal operations teams, external contractors, field crews, and regulatory authorities. The individual in this position will foster a culture where autonomy, ownership, and impact are present at every organizational level. This role is critical to advancing Valar Atomics' mission of delivering scalable, high-temperature nuclear power for industry and next-generation manufacturing. The manager will ensure that safety practices are not merely reactive but are integrated into the strategic fabric of the site's operations.

What you'll do

You will design intake workflows to systematically identify site hazards and align them precisely with evolving regulatory requirements. You will author and update Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) policies, covering lockout/tagout procedures, confined space entry protocols, and industrial hygiene practice standards. You will analyze audit findings and inspection data to drive timely corrective actions and systematically close identified compliance gaps. You will manage the shipment and tracking of hazardous waste, maintaining strict adherence to Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) obligations. You will partner with operations teams and contractors to ensure safety practices are consistently applied, documented, and validated across all site activities. You will champion behavior-based safety programs that actively engage teams in real-time hazard recognition and collective risk mitigation. You will maintain all necessary federal, state, and local permits and submit required reporting to satisfy Department of Energy (DOE), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and local authorities. You will lead thorough incident investigations and near-miss analyses to extract actionable learnings and implement preventative measures to prevent recurrence. You will coordinate effectively with the Department of Transportation (DOT) and local fire agencies on all transport and site safety matters. You will verify contractor safety performance and ensure strict adherence to Valar Atomics site standards and operational protocols.

Requirements

You must hold current knowledge of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and Department of Energy (DOE) regulations specific to nuclear sites and related industrial environments. You must manage Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) hazardous waste programs and ensure strict compliance with all applicable requirements at all times. You must coordinate effectively with the Department of Transportation (DOT) and local fire agencies on transport, storage, and site safety matters. You must verify contractor safety performance through oversight and ensure adherence to established site standards and operational procedures. You must lead incident investigations and document corrective actions in a thorough, effective, and timely manner. You must implement and maintain environmental compliance programs, monitoring and reporting as required by state and federal authorities. You must ensure that all safety and environmental documentation is accurate, complete, and readily available for regulatory inspection. You must promote a strong safety culture that encourages compliance, continuous improvement, and proactive hazard identification among all site personnel.

Nice to have

Prior experience within advanced nuclear energy facilities or manufacturing environments is preferred for this role.

Skills & Tools

Proficiency with OSHA, EPA, DOE, RCRA, DOT, and NFPA standards is required for successful performance in this position. Familiarity with Valar Atomics operations, safety culture, and engineering processes is essential for effective integration and decision-making.

Hours: Standard business hours may be adjusted to meet operational and regulatory needs, including occasional after-hours incident response.

Travel: Minimal to none, primarily site-based with coordination of off-site regulatory and contractor activities.
