What you'll do
- Lead and mentor a team of over 10 engineers, focusing on delivering high-quality technical solutions that enhance user experiences and drive performance.

- Supervise the design and execution of cross-functional projects that align with business objectives and deliver measurable results.
- Ensure the reliability, performance, and scalability of customer-facing applications by applying best practices in software engineering.
- Collaborate closely with architecture and infrastructure teams to align technical initiatives with overarching engineering goals.
- Work alongside product managers, designers, and engineering leaders to gather requirements, ensuring that solutions comply with business needs and regulatory standards.
- Maintain clear communication with stakeholders regarding project progress, potential risks, and opportunities for improvement.
- Manage project timelines and resources effectively to ensure timely delivery of high-quality products.
- Implement frameworks that promote efficient project execution and continuous delivery of enhancements.
Requirements
- A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related discipline, along with a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience, including at least 5 years in a management role.
- A proven track record of successfully leading and scaling engineering teams, demonstrated by improvements in delivery metrics and team growth.
- Experience in workflow automation, data integration, and event-driven architectures that enhance operational efficiency.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with Product and Machine Learning teams to deploy scalable models and build production-ready systems.
- Excellent communication skills, capable of influencing both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Strong analytical and strategic thinking abilities, with a proactive approach to problem-solving.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in developing products within the fintech sector, particularly in credit servicing or customer support domains.
- Familiarity with lending, recoveries, or collections systems that involve complex policy and compliance considerations.
- Background in mentoring senior engineers or emerging leaders within the engineering field.
- Proven ability to balance speed, quality, reliability, and compliance in high-pressure technical settings.
- Experience managing critical production issues in regulated environments where customer impact and compliance are crucial.
Position location
This position is available for remote work within the United States.
Time zone requirements
The team operates across East and West Coast time zones.
Travel requirements
As a digital-first organization, most of your work can be performed remotely. While Upstart employees can work from anywhere in the U.S., we encourage regular in-person collaboration through team gatherings. Most teams meet once or twice a quarter for 2-4 consecutive days.
At Upstart, your base salary is just one component of your total compensation package. The anticipated base salary for this role ranges from $195,300 to $270,400 USD, depending on geographic location and individual qualifications such as skills and experience. During the hiring process, your recruiter will provide more details about the specific salary range for your preferred location.
In addition to base pay, Upstart offers target bonuses, equity compensation, and a comprehensive benefits package that includes medical, dental, vision, and a 401(k) plan.
