About the role
You will lead one or more engineering teams responsible for a critical domain within the Upstart Bank platform. You will translate product, regulatory, and operational priorities into technical execution plans and reliable delivery across systems such as ledgering, funding, payments, reporting, or integrations. You will partner closely with Product, Compliance, Legal, Risk, Finance, and Operations to ensure technical decisions align with business and regulatory requirements. You will contribute to the technical direction and architecture of your area, ensuring systems are designed for reliability, resilience, security, traceability, and auditability. You will manage cross-functional dependencies and drive improvements in the predictability and quality of delivery across teams. You will build and refine engineering processes that support internal controls, audits, change management, and reliable operation in a regulated environment. You will hire, coach, and develop engineers and emerging engineering leaders while fostering a culture of rigor, ownership, accountability, and continuous improvement.

Drive execution across complex, bank-critical systems in areas such as ledgering and funding, deposits and payments, reporting, or integrations.
Partner with Product, Compliance, Legal, Risk, Finance, and Operations to translate business and regulatory needs into technical plans and delivered software.
Contribute to technical direction and architecture for your area, ensuring systems support reliability, resilience, security, traceability, and auditability.
Manage cross-functional dependencies and improve the predictability and quality of delivery across teams.
Build engineering processes that support internal controls, audits, change management, and reliable operation in a regulated environment.
Hire, coach, and develop engineers and emerging engineering leaders.
Foster a culture of rigor, ownership, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Evaluate and adopt technologies, tools, and practices that improve engineering efficiency and system robustness.
Work effectively in a fast-paced, ambiguous environment while maintaining attention to detail and compliance standards.
Collaborate with distributed teams across time zones, aligning on goals and sharing knowledge.
Communicate progress, risks, and trade-offs clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Support the design and implementation of test strategies, observability, and incident response practices for critical banking systems.

Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
8+ years of engineering experience, including 3+ years of engineering management experience.
Experience leading engineering teams through complex, cross-functional platform or infrastructure initiatives.
Strong technical background with experience contributing to architecture and technical direction for distributed systems, cloud platforms, or business-critical infrastructure.
Experience building and operating software in regulated environments is required.
Experience with ledgering, financial transactions, or payment systems is required.
Experience delivering reliable, audit-ready software in production is required.
Strong understanding of security, compliance, and risk considerations relevant to financial services is required.
Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, ambiguous environment while maintaining attention to detail and compliance standards.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Strong collaboration and influence skills, with experience partnering across product, legal, compliance, risk, finance, and operations.
Proven ability to manage priorities, manage competing deadlines, and deliver results in a dynamic environment.
Demonstrated commitment to learning, continuous improvement, and constructive feedback.
