Torc Robotics is seeking a talented Software Engineer II to join our Scaled Simulation team. This position involves designing, developing, and maintaining cloud-based simulation services that support testing and validation of autonomous vehicle systems. Key facts
This position is based on-site at either our Ann Arbor, Michigan office or our Blacksburg, Virginia office. It is a full-time role, requiring on-site presence as specified. The team you will join is focused on simulation environments, working to develop and operate large-scale cloud simulation services that support our autonomous vehicle testing efforts. The role involves collaboration with other engineering teams, including vehicle software, perception, and control teams, to ensure simulation systems meet the needs of vehicle testing and development. What you'll do
- Design, develop, and oversee cloud-based simulation services that facilitate virtual testing of autonomous vehicle systems, including large-scale simulation runs and driver-stack validation.
- Write, test, and maintain high-quality code primarily in Python and C++, ensuring robustness and efficiency in simulation software components.
- Deploy and manage scalable cloud infrastructure using AWS services, including EC2, S3, Lambda, and others, to support simulation workloads.
- Implement infrastructure-as-code solutions using Terraform to automate provisioning, configuration, and management of cloud resources, ensuring repeatability and reliability.
- Collaborate with hardware and software teams to integrate simulation services with vehicle testing workflows, providing support and troubleshooting as needed.
- Develop automation pipelines for continuous integration and continuous deployment (CI/CD), enabling rapid iteration and deployment of simulation updates.
- Create and maintain comprehensive documentation for simulation systems, APIs, and workflows to facilitate team collaboration and onboarding.
- Support vehicle testing activities by providing simulation data, troubleshooting issues, and optimizing simulation performance.
- Participate in regular team meetings, sharing progress, challenges, and ideas for improving simulation capabilities.
- Take ownership of assigned projects, demonstrating accountability and proactive problem-solving to meet project milestones.
- Join on-call rotation to respond to system alerts, address operational issues, and ensure high availability of simulation services.
- Communicate effectively with team members and stakeholders, providing updates on project status and technical challenges.
- Contribute to the development of best practices for cloud simulation, automation, and software engineering within the team.
- Stay current with emerging technologies and industry trends related to cloud computing, robotics, and simulation to continuously improve our systems.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience; or a Master's degree with at least 3 years of experience.
- Proven experience designing and deploying managed cloud services, preferably with AWS cloud platform.
- Strong programming skills in Python and C++, with a solid understanding of software engineering principles and best practices.
- Hands-on experience working in Linux environments, including scripting with Bash and other shell languages.
- Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform for provisioning and managing cloud infrastructure.
- Knowledge of modern software development workflows, including CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and version control systems like Git.
- Excellent analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong communication skills, capable of documenting complex systems and collaborating effectively across teams.
Nice to have
- Experience working with autonomous vehicle systems, robotics, or simulation environments.
- Production experience with C++ in a software engineering context.
- Familiarity with Bazel build system and build automation tools.
- Knowledge of Robot Operating System (ROS) and related robotics middleware.
- Understanding of robotics algorithms, sensor data processing, and vehicle control systems.
- Experience with containerization technologies such as Docker or Kubernetes.
- Exposure to simulation frameworks and tools used in autonomous vehicle development.

- The position offers a competitive salary range of $139,000 to $166,800 USD, complemented by a performance bonus and stock options.
