About the role
Torc Robotics is on the lookout for a Senior Machine Learning Engineer with a focus on 3D perception to advance our autonomous trucking technology. In this role, you will be part of a dedicated team working to develop sophisticated machine learning systems that empower our vehicles to accurately understand their environment. Your primary responsibility will be to enhance our Bird's Eye View perception capabilities, playing a crucial role in the overall effectiveness of our autonomy stack.

What you'll do
- Design, implement, and deploy machine learning models that bolster our perception systems.
- Oversee the entire model development lifecycle for specific perception challenges, from initial data preparation to final deployment.
- Produce high-quality production code for machine learning applications to support scalable training and evaluation workflows.
- Evaluate model performance, identify failure points, and refine models to boost accuracy and adaptability across diverse driving scenarios.
- Develop and enhance perception models using multi-modal sensor data, with a particular emphasis on camera and 3D perception systems.
- Collaborate closely with software and infrastructure engineers to seamlessly integrate perception models into our production software.
- Improve training pipelines and data workflows to accelerate the model development and deployment process.
- Engage in discussions about model architecture and technical strategies within the team.
- Mentor junior engineers on best practices for implementation and experimentation in machine learning.
Requirements
- A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, Machine Learning, or a related discipline, with at least 6 years of relevant experience; or a Master's degree with a minimum of 3 years of experience; or a Ph.D. with at least 1 year of experience.
- Demonstrated experience in creating production-level machine learning models for computer vision, perception, robotics, or autonomous systems.
- Strong programming capabilities in Python and PyTorch, with a proven history of writing production-quality machine learning code.
- Experience in training and optimizing deep learning models using extensive datasets.
- Familiarity with image-based and/or 3D perception systems.
- Solid understanding of deep learning architectures relevant to perception tasks.
- Experience in troubleshooting model behavior and analyzing performance metrics to improve model reliability.
- Ability to translate complex perception challenges into actionable machine learning solutions and work autonomously to achieve objectives.
- Experience collaborating across teams to integrate machine learning models into broader software systems.
Nice to have
- Experience in developing perception systems specifically for autonomous driving or robotics applications.
- Familiarity with LiDAR, point cloud processing, sensor fusion, or other methodologies related to 3D perception.
- Knowledge of temporal perception models or video-based learning techniques.
- Proficiency in C++, ROS, or other robotics software development tools.
- Experience in deploying machine learning models within production environments for autonomy or robotics.
- Exposure to large-scale perception datasets and distributed training configurations.
- Understanding of frameworks for perception evaluation, model validation, and performance benchmarking.
- Experience in enhancing machine learning tools, infrastructure, or workflows to expedite model iteration.
