As we expand our New Ventures team, we seek a Director of Engineering to lead the development and scaling of innovative products that will significantly contribute to our long-term growth. What you'll do
- Spearhead the creation, development, and expansion of a new business line that will play a crucial role in Toast's future growth trajectory.
- Partner with product leadership to conduct thorough market research and competitive analysis, ensuring our offerings meet customer needs and industry trends.
- Assume ownership of the technology aspects of your product, overseeing architecture, technical design, and development processes.
- Attract and mentor talented individuals to join the New Ventures program, guiding them in the creation of new products and business initiatives.
- Establish and track objectives and key results (OKRs) with your team, regularly updating cross-functional partners on progress and plans.
- Collaborate with leadership to make informed decisions regarding funding, scaling, discontinuing, or spinning off New Ventures projects.
- Take full accountability for the technology efforts within the New Ventures product line, ensuring alignment with company goals.
- Stay informed about emerging technologies and assess their potential impact on the success of your product line.
- Manage and report on the necessary efforts, quality, and scope required to develop New Ventures projects, communicating effectively with stakeholders.
- Over time, build and lead a high-performing entrepreneurial team that is focused on achieving results and driving innovation.
Requirements
- A minimum of 10 years of engineering experience, including at least 5 years in senior leadership roles.
- Demonstrated success in building and scaling platform or infrastructure teams.
- Proven ability to recruit, develop, and lead high-performing teams effectively.
- Experience in high-growth or early-stage environments, with a record of addressing complex, large-scale challenges under uncertain conditions.
- Familiarity with developer productivity and delivery platforms, such as CI/CD, feature management, and experimentation frameworks like Harness.
- Knowledge of the evolving landscape of software development, particularly in relation to automation, rapid iteration cycles, and programmatic control of delivery workflows.
- Extensive experience in designing and managing large-scale distributed systems.
- Strong grasp of modern architectural patterns, including service-oriented, event-driven, and cloud-native designs.
- Capability to create extensible systems and reusable abstractions beyond just end-user features.
- A proactive approach to removing obstacles for team members while fostering connections with centralized functions.
- A history of effective leadership and accountability, consistently meeting or surpassing objectives from inception to launch.
- Ability to estimate and deliver on product vision and roadmap with confidence regarding feasibility, timelines, costs, and impact.
- Exceptional attention to detail and skill in managing expectations at both executive and cross-functional levels.
- Strong interpersonal skills with a proven track record of building relationships and driving consensus across teams.
- Experience in cultivating an inclusive culture that promotes high performance within teams.
