About the role
The New York Times seeks a Senior Analyst to join the Data and Insights Group (DIG). In this position, you will own complex analytics that guide major product decisions across Newsroom and marketing. You will translate messy datasets into clear narratives while upholding journalistic standards. This role demands rigorous collaboration with cross functional teams to turn questions into action.
Location
The role is based in New York, NY.
Engagement
This is a full time position.
Compensation
The compensation for this role includes a base salary range of $101,000 to $120,000. In addition to base salary, this role is also eligible for variable pay, such as an annual bonus and restricted stock.
What you will do
You will set data quality standards to ensure dashboards serve evolving business questions accurately. You will design SQL pipelines that transform raw events into structured insights for executive review. You will run A/B tests and interpret results to guide product iteration and user experience changes. You will draft clear recommendations that help editors and product teams prioritize roadmap initiatives. You will translate ambiguous requests into structured analysis plans across news and commercial domains. You will champion data literacy so non technical stakeholders can explore metrics independently. You will partner with engineers to define tracking schemas that support future product experiments. You will mentor junior analysts through code reviews and collaborative problem solving sessions.
Basic requirements
You must bring 3-5 years of professional analytics experience delivering reports and insights. You must demonstrate advanced SQL skills for querying large datasets in relational databases. You must show proficiency in at least one scripting language such as R or Python. You must have experience building and maintaining dashboards and automated reporting workflows. You must understand experimental design including A/B testing concepts and interpretation. You must value journalistic independence and commit to the mission of seeking truth and helping people understand the world. You must communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders and thrive in cross functional settings. You must hold a collaborative mindset and intellectual curiosity when tackling ambiguous problems. Experience with big data platforms like BigQuery or AWS querying 10 million plus rows is required. Experience with dbt or similar data transformation and scheduling tools is required. Experience using version control via GitHub with code review practices is required. Experience designing and analyzing A/B tests to inform product decisions is required.
Preferred qualifications
You must have 1+ years of experience working in big data environments such as BigQuery or AWS, querying 10 million plus rows. You must have 1+ years of experience working in dbt or other data transformation or scheduling tools. You must have 1+ years of experience with version control, such as GitHub and code review practices. You must have 1+ years of experience with A/B testing. Experience contributing in fast paced newsroom environments alongside journalists is a plus.
