Talent Consultant
Job description
About the role
The role supports Talent Safari in supplying talent to fast-growing African startups. You own the full-cycle recruitment process for multiple clients while contributing to process improvements. The position requires adaptability to high-intensity environments and frequent collaboration with founders at early-stage companies.
Software engineers turn product ideas into working code. Engineers work in small teams, review each other's work, and ship in small batches. Most teams follow agile practices such as sprints and daily standups. Engineers also write tests, fix bugs, and improve performance. The field values clear communication as much as technical skill. Engineers spend part of every week on planning, code review, and debugging, not just writing new code. The ability to explain a technical decision in plain words separates strong engineers from the rest.
Key facts
What you'll do
Outcomes move hires through the pipeline and satisfy demanding client timelines when you own searches from kick-off to close, including specification, sourcing, screening, offer, and onboarding.
Feedback on workflows and tooling increases efficiency and standardizes best practices when you input to processes and suggest improvements that help the team grow and optimize.
Exposure to diverse roles keeps your recruiting skills broad and relevant to evolving market needs as you work on a range of roles for some of Africa's most exciting companies.
Requirements
You have 2 5 years of total experience, ideally in startup recruitment, and we will also consider high-output ops/strategy talent from fast-moving startups, and demonstrated experience in dynamic environments shows you can handle ambiguous and urgent requests.
Concrete outcomes such as shipped deliverables or filled roles validate your ability to deliver under pressure when you have evidence that you learn fast and execute faster, through shipped projects, closed hires, or hustles.
Clear communication keeps stakeholders aligned and reduces rework across the recruitment lifecycle when you communicate clearly in written and spoken English.
Comfort with demanding targets and candid feedback ensures you thrive in a fast-paced, results-driven context when you have an appetite for high-intensity work, blunt feedback and autonomy.
Practical notes
The role is open to candidates based anywhere in African timezone, with particular interest in candidates in Nairobi, Cape Town, Lagos, Abidjan, and Kigali. Travel within African cities may be required for collaboration and team offsites. Typical interview steps
Hiring for engineering roles usually starts with a recruiter screen, followed by one or two technical rounds. Candidates often solve a coding problem, discuss past projects, and answer system design questions. Some loops include a take-home task. Final rounds typically cover team fit and give candidates a chance to ask questions. Interviewers look for how you break down an unfamiliar problem, not just whether you reach the answer. Practicing a few problems aloud and reviewing your own past projects are the best preparation.
Good to know
The role uses tools such as LinkedIn and AI-assisted sourcing platforms to identify and engage candidates.
General recruitment for technology startups informs much of the work, with exposure to roles in engineering, product, and data.
Success in this role depends on consistent execution, clear written communication, and comfort operating with autonomy.
The team operates on African time, with asynchronous communication and focused deep-work blocks shaping daily routines.
Career growth
Engineering careers usually progress from individual contributor to senior, staff, and principal levels. Some engineers move into management and lead teams of five to twenty people. Others stay on the technical track. Growth follows demonstrated impact, not tenure alone. A typical engineering ladder has clear levels with defined expectations for scope, quality, and mentorship. Moving up usually requires owning outcomes end to end rather than completing assigned tickets.
