About the role
Stratolaunch is on the lookout for a dynamic and experienced leader to take charge of the Mechanical Design Section. This pivotal position involves direct reporting to the Engineering Department Manager and collaborating closely with other section managers to enhance the engineering team's capabilities. The successful candidate will oversee the engineering talent responsible for the design and functionality of both ground and flight mechanical systems. A strong background in leadership, technical expertise, and a genuine passion for team development are essential for this role.

What you'll do
- Provide technical guidance and conduct peer reviews to support your direct reports and various programs within your area of expertise.
- Collaborate with senior technical leaders to set and uphold technical best practices and standards across the organization.
- Assist the Department Manager in initiatives aimed at employee development and retention, ensuring a motivated and skilled workforce.
- Work alongside the Department Manager, Human Resources, and Talent Acquisition to identify and recruit qualified engineering candidates, forming strong interview teams to align with strategic program objectives.
- Lead performance management and development initiatives for your team, partnering with the Department Manager and Human Resources to foster growth.
- Ensure that your direct reports adhere to relevant policies and procedures, including timekeeping and employee handbook guidelines.
- Collaborate with programs and the Department Manager to address tactical staffing needs and resolve any resource conflicts that may arise.
- Support the Department Manager in the formulation and execution of strategic staffing initiatives to meet business goals.
- Contribute to proposal efforts as necessary, showcasing the capabilities of your section.
- Balance management responsibilities with chargeable tasks related to programs or other support functions, such as Bid & Proposal or IR&D.
Requirements
- Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and conflict resolution abilities.
- Proven track record as a technical contributor or team leader within a technical environment.
- Experience in recruiting and hiring technical personnel effectively.
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills to tackle complex, multidisciplinary challenges.
- Ability to work autonomously in a fast-paced environment while achieving business objectives.
- Technical proficiency in at least one relevant engineering domain related to the section's focus.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen with the capability to obtain a Department of Defense (DOD) security clearance.
Nice to have
- Familiarity with matrixed organizations and staffing technical personnel across various programs.
- Experience in leading and managing small to medium-sized technical teams (10+) in resource-constrained settings, particularly in aerospace development.
- An active DOD security clearance, enhancing your candidacy for this role.
Skills & tools
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) is required for effective communication and documentation.
