Software Engineer II
Job description
About the Role
The role of Software Engineer II at Stone is critical to the continuous evolution of our core payment platform. As a technology company focused on financial services and committed to the customer above all, we seek professionals who will own the design, development, and maintenance of features that directly impact our business and our entrepreneurs. This position requires a proactive individual who will not only execute on technical tasks but also contribute to the architectural integrity and security of our systems. You will be responsible for transforming business requirements from product managers into robust, scalable, and reliable technical solutions. Furthermore, you will act as a mentor, guiding junior engineers through code reviews and pair programming to elevate the overall quality of our deliverables and foster a culture of continuous learning.
This role demands a deep commitment to excellence in software engineering practices. You will be expected to analyze complex problems, optimize system performance, and ensure that all solutions meet strict standards for security, scalability, and availability. Participation in the entire software lifecycle is essential, from initial discussion and planning through deployment and post-production support. By engaging in on-call rotations and championing best practices in testing and documentation, you will ensure the long-term maintainability and stability of the services we provide to millions of entrepreneurs across Brazil.
What You'll Do
Your daily responsibilities will focus on delivering high-impact solutions that drive our business forward. You will design and implement new features for our core payment platform, applying modern engineering practices to solve real-world financial problems. A significant part of your role will involve optimizing the performance and reliability of existing services to ensure high availability and a seamless experience for our customers.
You will work in close collaboration with product owners and cross-functional teams to refine requirements and define technical specifications for upcoming initiatives. This involves conducting in-depth analysis of complex issues and developing scalable solutions that meet both technical constraints and business objectives. Your work will involve writing clean, maintainable code that adheres to established architectural patterns and security guidelines.
Key aspects of the role include partnering with QA engineers to develop comprehensive test strategies and automate validation processes, ensuring the highest quality standards. You will mentor junior developers through pair programming and constructive feedback, sharing your knowledge during code reviews to uphold engineering excellence across the team. You will integrate third-party services and APIs to enable seamless payment experiences and monitor system health to troubleshoot incidents in production environments with minimal disruption.
Contributing to technical documentation is essential for knowledge sharing and continuity, while supporting the deployment pipeline enables continuous integration and delivery of software releases. You will actively engage in agile ceremonies to provide accurate estimates and improve team velocity, and you will explore emerging technologies to propose innovative approaches to business problems. Collaboration with data teams will be crucial to ensure metrics alignment and informed decision-making.
Requirements
To be successful in this role, you must meet specific professional and technical criteria. We require 2 years of relevant professional experience in software development, demonstrating a proven track record in the field. You must have experience working with relational databases and SQL to manage and query data effectively.

You must possess a solid understanding of distributed systems and microservices architecture, along with experience in containerization technologies such as Docker and orchestration tools like Kubernetes. Familiarity with message brokers such as Kafka and SQS for asynchronous communication is necessary to handle our event-driven architecture.
We also seek professionals who can work independently while collaborating effectively within agile teams. Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English are required for technical discussions and collaboration with global partners. Your ability to take ownership of your work, solve problems analytically, and contribute to a high-performance engineering culture is fundamental to this position.
Nice to Have
While not mandatory, experience working with payment systems or financial services platforms provides a significant advantage. Knowledge of cloud providers and infrastructure as code practices is highly valued, as is an understanding of data pipelines and real-time processing concepts. Contributions to open source projects or personal technical blogs demonstrate a commitment to the broader engineering community and continuous self-improvement.
