This on-site position involves setting up, programming, and operating CNC lathes to manufacture complex parts according to detailed engineering drawings and specifications. Key facts
What you'll do
- Set up and operate 2-axis CNC lathes for manufacturing aerospace and robotics components, ensuring precision and adherence to specifications.
- Develop, edit, and refine CNC programs using OKUMA G-code, optimizing for efficiency and quality.
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, CAD/CAM models, and GD&T specifications to plan machining strategies and select appropriate tooling.
- Perform machine setups, including soft jaw cutting, collet changes, tooling installation, and setting offsets to prepare machines for production runs.
- Conduct in-process inspections of machined parts using various measurement tools such as calipers, micrometers, and gauges to verify dimensions and tolerances.
- Maintain detailed records of print mark-ups, CNC programs, setup sheets, and tooling lists to ensure traceability and facilitate troubleshooting.
- Optimize tooling choices, speeds, and feeds to maximize productivity, extend tool life, and maintain high-quality standards.
- Perform general shop duties including saw cutting raw materials, deburring machined parts, grinding, and cleaning to support overall workflow.
- Keep the work environment clean, organized, and safe by following proper procedures and maintaining equipment.
- Troubleshoot machine issues promptly, perform minor repairs, and implement process improvements to minimize downtime.
- Mentor and train team members on machine operation, programming, and best practices to foster a collaborative and skilled team.
- Assist with product assembly, packaging, and other tasks to support team goals and project timelines.
- Support preventative maintenance routines and minor repairs on CNC machines to ensure continuous operation.
- Collaborate with engineering and quality teams to resolve machining challenges and improve processes.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to enhance manufacturing efficiency, quality, and safety standards.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- 2 to 5 years of CNC machining experience, specifically with CNC lathes.
- Strong knowledge of 2-axis CNC turning operations and familiarity with machining aerospace components.
- Proficiency with OKUMA OSP controls and G-code programming, or a willingness to learn these controls.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings, GD&T specifications, and CAD/CAM models for machining planning.
- Capable of lifting up to 25 lbs without assistance and performing physical tasks such as standing, bending, grasping, and pulling regularly.
- Excellent attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality parts.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
- Must be a U.S. citizen, national, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee, or eligible for required U.S. Department of State authorizations.
- Good communication skills and a proactive approach to troubleshooting and process improvement.
- Basic understanding of inspection tools and quality control procedures.
Nice to have
- 5 or more years of CNC machining experience, with a focus on turning operations.
- Expertise in CNC turning processes such as boring, grooving, threading, and drilling using various chucks and collets.
- Experience working on complex turning contours and aerospace-grade parts.
- Background in optimizing machining processes for productivity, repeatability, and quality assurance.
- Familiarity with feeds, speeds, and tooling for materials like 6061/7075 aluminum, 300/400 series stainless steel, carbon steels, and plastics.
- Experience mentoring or leading shop floor projects, fostering team development and process improvements.
- Knowledge of advanced inspection techniques and equipment.
- Ability to adapt to new technologies and continuously improve machining skills.
