You will own the definition of drainage strategies for transport corridors, balancing capacity, safety, and ecology from initial intake through final sign-off. You will transform complex water movement challenges into practical, tested designs that support connected communities while guiding projects through build, review, and delivery stages in collaboration with partners. Your analysis will ensure that solutions are not only technically sound but also practical and aligned with real-world constraints. What you'll do
Chart intake procedures for stormwater data, confirming site limits before any hydraulic modeling or analysis begins.
Construct hydraulic models to simulate flows across various scenarios, then refine assumptions to ensure predictions match observed conditions accurately.
Evaluate alternatives against established standards, documenting tradeoffs clearly so reviewers and stakeholders understand each decision's implications.
Coordinate with local, state, and federal agencies to confirm that proposed layouts meet all regulations before detailed drafting and design commence.
Design drainage infrastructure by sizing channels, inlets, and controls to manage project-specific design storms and runoff characteristics.
Verify construction documents to ensure details remain buildable, coordinating with contractors and inspectors to maintain design intent.
Conduct field measurements and support testing during the construction phase, adjusting plans when site conditions differ from original assumptions or modeling.
Liaise with cross-functional teams to integrate drainage solutions within broader transportation projects, ensuring compatibility with roadways, bridges, and utilities.
Guide solutions toward successful delivery by anticipating risks, mitigating issues early, and maintaining alignment with project goals and partner expectations.
Produce clear, defensible design outputs using standard engineering documentation practices, ensuring traceability from assumptions to final construction plans.
Support post-construction evaluations and as-built reviews to improve future projects and incorporate lessons learned into standard practices.
Apply creative problem-solving to unique site constraints, balancing practical execution with regulatory compliance and long-term performance.
Utilize advanced analysis techniques to assess drainage patterns, identify potential flood risks, and recommend mitigation measures where appropriate.
Maintain current knowledge of evolving municipal standards and federal regulations to ensure all designs remain compliant throughout project lifecycles.
Collaborate with junior team members and stakeholders to foster a culture of continuous learning and quality improvement within the drainage group.
Requirements
Hold a degree in engineering or a closely related field to demonstrate foundational knowledge of fluid behavior and hydrologic principles.
Possess a minimum of three years of experience in drainage or transport projects to prove you can apply methods to real-world constraints and site conditions.
Understand municipal standards and federal regulations deeply to structure safe, compliant drainage systems that meet all legal requirements.
Exhibit strong written and verbal communication skills to explain technical reasoning clearly to clients, agencies, and cross-functional partners.
Show proficiency with modeling software and drawing tools to produce accurate, clear, and defensible design outputs that stand up to review.
Maintain attention to detail to ensure that all design calculations, assumptions, and documentation are thorough and error-free.
Demonstrate the ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team, managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
