Senior Resident Project Representative

About the role

You will exercise ownership over complex municipal and federal-aid infrastructure projects from conception through closeout while applying your construction engineering expertise to enforce contractual compliance and quality standards on site. You will lead a multidisciplinary on-site team, directing daily inspections, observations, and reporting to ensure adherence to plans, specifications, and regulatory requirements. You will act as the primary technical liaison between the owner, contractor, and design team, resolving field issues through timely and documented decision-making. You will champion business development initiatives within the construction group, identifying opportunities and nurturing relationships that enhance project delivery and firm growth. What you'll do

Coordinate and execute comprehensive construction inspection programs for municipal, IDOT, ISTHA, and federal-aid projects to verify conformance with contract documents.

Perform independent on-site assessments, interpreting plans, specifications, and technical reports to ensure accurate and consistent field implementation.

Lead the preparation of detailed daily field reports, observations, and progress documentation that communicate project status to stakeholders clearly and accurately.

Conduct rigorous quality assurance reviews of contractor submissions, including methods, materials, and sequencing, to safeguard project integrity and compliance.

Facilitate formal and informal meetings with contractors, consultants, and owner representatives to address technical issues, resolve disputes, and confirm decisions.

Monitor schedule adherence, critical path activities, and milestone achievement, escalating potential delays or impacts to project delivery as appropriate.

Evaluate contractor compliance with safety regulations, environmental requirements, and municipal standards to maintain lawful and responsible construction practices.

Support the development and execution of business development strategies within the construction group, including market analysis and opportunity identification.

Promote continuous improvement by integrating emerging technologies, digital tools, and resiliency practices into field inspection and contract administration workflows.

Champion the growth of the construction group through mentorship, performance feedback, and the cultivation of a high-performing, collaborative team environment.

Requirements

Demonstrate a strong background in construction engineering or a related field with significant experience in municipal, transportation, or heavy civil project environments.

Hold a valid Professional Engineer (PE) license with proof of good standing, demonstrating your qualification to supervise and sign off on construction inspection activities.

Possess a minimum of eight years of progressively responsible experience in construction inspection, contract administration, or a closely related role within the engineering or construction sectors.

Show a proven track record of managing multiple concurrent projects and priorities in a fast-paced, deadline-driven field environment.

Exhibit strong written and verbal communication skills, enabling effective coordination with diverse stakeholders, including public agencies, contractors, and technical teams.

Display a thorough understanding of construction materials, methods, and quality control procedures as they apply to municipal and infrastructure projects.

Demonstrate the ability to interpret complex technical documents, including plans, specifications, and contract clauses, to ensure accurate field application.

Nice to have

Experience with ISTHA and IDOT projects is preferred, providing familiarity with specific agency requirements and project delivery methods.

Experience in business development or growth-oriented activities within the construction sector is preferred.

Proficiency with digital tools, field reporting platforms, and project management software that support efficient documentation and data sharing.

Practical notes

This role is based onsite in Chicago, IL, requiring full-time presence and engagement at the project location.

Travel may be required to visit project sites, meet with stakeholders, and conduct field inspections across the Chicago area and beyond.
