The Senior Mechanical Engineer will function as a discipline leader or project engineer. This position provides mentoring opportunities to build project management capabilities. The role focuses on projects requiring the application of standard mechanical engineering techniques and procedures. Candidates must bring power generation experience. Experience in university central plants, industrial facilities, or related fields is essential. Work involves new plant design and existing plant retrofits. Upgrades to liquid, gas, or steam process systems are common. Industrial and process facilities, plus energy infrastructure projects, fall within scope. Project scale and location will vary.

What you'll do

• Perform detailed mechanical engineering analyses for complex systems in the Muscatine, Iowa office.
• Execute design calculations, specifications, and drawing preparation for mechanical systems independently.
• Validate design criteria and technical approaches for power generation and process infrastructure projects.
• Conduct system hydraulic modeling, pipe stress analysis, and equipment sizing to meet project requirements.
• Develop and review Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams and process flow diagrams for clarity and accuracy.
• Apply knowledge of thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, and heat transfer to solve advanced engineering problems.
• Ensure all designs adhere strictly to national codes and industry standards for mechanical systems.
• Provide direction and mentoring to junior engineering staff on technical tasks and deliverables.
• Prepare mass and energy balances for industrial and energy infrastructure applications.
• Interpret and apply national codes and industry standards to mechanical design tasks.
• Communicate design intent effectively to both internal teams and external stakeholders.
• Support project execution in energy, federal government, transportation, and water sectors as needed.
• Adapt to project scale and location variability while maintaining high standards of quality and documentation.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate mechanical solutions into broader infrastructure projects.

Requirements

• Hold a degree in mechanical engineering or a similar discipline from an accredited institution.
• Possess a minimum of 15 years of hands-on experience in mechanical engineering applications.
• Apply standard mechanical engineering methods to energy and process infrastructure challenges.
• Demonstrate recent work in power generation, central plants, or heavy industrial settings.
• Prepare technical documents, calculations, and models with precision and clarity.
• Communicate effectively with internal engineering teams and external partners.
• Interpret national codes and industry standards for mechanical systems accurately.
• Exhibit the ability to communicate design intent clearly and professionally.
• Mentor less experienced staff on technical tasks and project deliverables consistently.
• Understand means and methods specific to power generation or similar industries.
